Work from home Mom fights with newborn

Uhuh.

I now know that I fight a losing battle with not two but THREE extremely stubborn people in my life.

For T2’s first two weeks, she had been very good. Waking regularly for feeds every 2-4 hours which I could handle but these last few days, TWICE she has been awake from 2.30am to 6am – feeding, pooping, then feeding again, then pooping, then playing quietly by herself, then wanting the breast again! then pooping, then wanting the breast again……This entire process takes 3.5 hours, I kid you not. The first feed she would feed for half an hour. The next feed maybe 15 minutes. The third feed, it’s ten minutes and I know that by then, she can’t be hungry and just wants the breast as a pacifier.

So last night, I tried the ‘cry it out’ method. I let her cry and told her the breast is only for FOOD, to eat, not for other forms of pleasure, not for playing. She cried. It wasn’t a hungry cry. It was a pitiful, whimpering kitten kind of cry. I carried her.

She would cry intermittently and I would rock her and sing to her. Then her cries became louder and more audible after an hour but soon, she had fallen to sleep with me just patting her. No breast. Yahoo! I thought I’d won the battle and quickly settled myself into bed.

Half an hour later, she started whimpering again. OMG!!! IT was already 5.30am!!! So I gave in and gave her the blasted breast and told myself that perhaps she was thirsty from all the crying.

Am I a mean Mom or what?!

Today, I am going to disturb her until she wakes up this evening so that she knocks out completely tired after midnight!

  1. Since T2 is still a newborn u shd feed her on demand (whether it’s every 10 mints or longer). Just my 2 cents. The more she nurses the more supply ur body will be producing.
When I was at the hosp after giving birth to Abilash, the bb was kept in the nursery & nurses brought him to me to bf. In the end, the nurses got so fed up as they bringing him to me every 10-20mints that they decided to leave Abilash in my room. I was the only bf mum in the room & felt so jeolous seeing the other mums snoring away while I was constantly nursing my bb!

  2. Oh boy….brings back memories. Best is..do your darndest to keep her awake and well fed during the day…so that nightime is really sleepytime.

But.. crap happens sometimes..and she will still wake up no matter what.

In time, her body will adjust. Just don’t ask me how long it’ll take….coz I. Don’t. Know!

    *runs away real fast*

  3. i think it is too early to “bully” her. feed her on demand so that she can grow, grow, grow. 🙂 i still feed my 4mo on demand and i have no complaint since i am not working; meaning i can nap when bb naps. 😀

  4. I’m a very big advocate of “CIO”. It doesn’t mean that you leave her alone but it just means you can continue to speak to her and reassure her. They need to learn how to fall asleep by themselves without any props eg rocking, pacifier, boobs. Perhaps also it’s growth spurts?

  5. The first 2 months are always like that. Both my girls were really bad – feeding them every 2 hours. Will get better soon. BTW, Harvynna does her taekwando at her school as part of her enrichment classes. Kizsports does offer it on wednesdays, i think.

  6. I didn’t bf direct but you know what we did to poor baby ? Kept her up all evening, talk, yank, touch, play etc.. till almost midnight then stuff a bottle of milk, if she’s already asleep, hubs will continue to press the teats for milk flow to her mouth. We need to keep her full and tired by midnight so hubs and I can sleep till at least 6am. Crazy huh ?

  7. Tank her up from 6pm till midnight, meaning feed every 1-2 hours……..so she can sleep for a longer stretch till 5-6am…..but that doesn’t mean u put her to sleep only at midnight, can got to sleep at 9-10pm, but u wake her up to feed

  8. i know i know. Although i’m not bf my babies, but i have to wake up every two hour to feed my twin boys, one after another, then make them burp and Fearles always after milk, he will vomit! Then they will get turn to play, crying. Nightmare for me. Some people told me don’t let them to sleep a lot day time, but how? They will automatically fall sleep, and sleep soundly in the morning! Some people told me, to “terbalik” the clothes, and give them wear, and cannot tell anyone what is the reason i do that, just want to make sure “babies will change back their normal routin” day time play, night time sleep, i try all the method, all didn’t work. That’s why, when my boys cried, i also cried together. hahahahha

  9. once u decided on ur method, stick to it..ie: feed on demand or feed by schedule.

when CL for with me….day time fed with breast milk. last feed always formula so that baby is FULL n slept thru. thus philip had the habit of sleeping thru except being hungry…

    best wishes

  10. I have always breastfed the girls at nite till they fall asleep.

Now its become a habit. Maegan is 4 and Melanie will be 2 in Oct. Both still need the breast to fall asleep… only now I am trying out the CIO method with my 4 year old. 🙁

  11. Oh no.. am I too late to congratulate your new born 😛 COngrats!!!!

You are not a mean mom my dear.. I am going through exactly the same phase like you… Know what, Sophie skips her night feeding about a week ago 🙂 (she is now about a month and a half) You are doing real good now! Way to go mommy!
