What to do when your four year old swears!

Tee loves singing. She loves singing so much that she is almost always singing. She loves making up lyrics too, quite a composer she is. She has figured out how to rhyme words and constantly asks if the words rhyme and if it is a good song. *roll eyeballs*

Recently, she’s had a new CD (and a new PINK CD PLAYER!!! which was a birthday gift from a group of dear friends) with a tune she loves so much that she keeps singing it over and over. She finds it funny when she puts her own lyrics into the tune. Unfortunately, I doubt you’d know the tune as it isn’t a common song, it’s called Baby Bumble Bee. Do you know it? The original lyrics:

little-musician.jpg

I’m bringing home a baby bumble bee,
Won’t my Mommy be so proud of me,
I’m bringing home a baby bumble bee,
Ouch! It stung me!

Tee was singing it today mixing all kinds of word like:

I’m eating in the basement, can’t you see…………..or
I’m dancing in the basement, can’t you see………….or
(not quite sure what the fascination with basements is but perhaps because she was singing this in the basement parking lot just when I parked the car)

I’m twirling in the basement, can’t you see………..and then,
I’m fucking in the basement, can’t you see……

I thought I’d misheard but just in case it wasn’t ‘farting’ because I was quite sure I heard the distinct ‘K’ sound; I went,“What did you say!!!?????!!!!!” whilst the entire floor vibrated.

She stops immediately and whispers, “Nothing.”

“What did you say?! I heard you singing, repeat what you sang!”I probed.

I could tell I wasn’t going to get a straight answer. Hmmmm, I wonder why…..

“No, nothing” came her stubborn reply. Thus after a series of asking her in various ways each time with my voice getting louder and higher, I finally took a deep breath.

“Tell me what you sang. I’m serious. I want you to tell me what you said.” I had toned down and asked her with an earnest face. She looked at me all doe eyed and said she sang the word that she wasn’t supposed to say, so she couldn’t tell me what it was.

Oh, brilliant. My fear was real.

*roll eyeballs ten times at pinball pace*

My girl knows the ‘F’ word. And she even knows that she is not allowed to say it. Where did she learn it from????

I didn’t ask her to repeat it, rather just warned her not to say it again.

“Okay, Mommy.”
