I am the Helicopter Mom – always hovering over poor Tee. But only because I know her strengths and weaknesses to a Tee. Tee is very good with speech and imagination, logic and fine motor skills. But she is not so good with her gross motor skills. Boys develop faster in that area. I think.
For example, I wouldn’t leave Tee loose in a playground because I know she isn’t able to climb the spiral pole that is 4 times her height. I know that she could fall off being on a deck 5 feet high because she is just clumsy that way. The way she accidentally hits cups over or spills bowls of food. I know she isn’t able to climb up the balancing beam that is at her shoulder height. And if she did, I should be near her.
Yesterday, we went to a playground because she really wanted to get out after being stuck at home for so long due to Mommy’s illness. So off we went. We bumped into some friends who were all wild running around the playground. They looked so confident and able. Whilst Tee was very cautious and clumsy. But she so wanted to follow the other kids.
I told myself to stop hovering. Perhaps my hovering is hindering her development. So I stayed cool and just observed.
One girl climbed onto the balancing beam. She was 5 inches taller, 5 months older than Tee.
THEN. She balanced the beam on her tummy. The beam was 5 inches wide and 4 feet high. And pretended to be flying like an airplane. My thoughts: Fuck. Tee is gonna want to do that.
And true enough. Tee climbed onto the lower beam first and then launched herself up to the higher beam. I was seated 5 feet away, resisting the temptation NOT TO HOVER. My body froze. And my fears enveloped me in waves as Tee tried to place the beam between her head and feet.
And then I saw her face. The face of terror as she lost her balance. Her head darted towards the concrete ground.
I dived in to catch her just before her head crashed to the ground. Avoiding my own accident falling over. The girl was in shock. And possibly relieved. I swear……when I caught her, the sense of relief for me was like the release of an orgasm. Mine anyway.
Rather than having to rush her to the nearest hospital for a head scan, I’d much rather be safe than sorry.
That’s why I’m a Helicopter Mom. I can’t afford any hospital bills right now.

Maybe it’s time to enrol her for some gym classes. Or take her to the playground more….yeah, Tee definitely needs more practice.
