Lately, there are a few lessons I’ve been trying to teach Tee which I feel are important. I know the school teaches them very good manners but because I don’t actually have a ‘manners’ manual or syllabus per se (and I have been meaning to write one up!), I have decided to reinforce certain attributes towards what is already taught at school. Besides, the only things that I know go on in school are bits and bobs from what Tee decides to reveal. Real secretive chick, I tell you.
For example, I know that the teacher will say things like “gentlemen will help to carry girl’s bags. Which one of you boys are a gentleman?” And so, Tee gets her heavy school bag carried by a male classmate up the stairs. Not every boy decides to be a gentleman though. And one day, she came home really happy because the boy she liked, carried her bag. *pengsan*
check out her red nails…
Today, we were at the local neighbourhood mall and she requested for 3 things to do to pass time. This is after her drama class, which we are already paying good money for. She wanted to decorate and Easter egg (cost RM25-30, can’t remember exactly), attend art class (cost RM45) or attend a lego workshop (cost RM50). I suggested we go home to paint instead (free!) but she said that at home, she would have to paint herself and it wasn’t fun. Poor lass, it is true as Mommy is always busy with baby.
Then I suggested that we go to the bookshop to read (free!). We did for a bit but T2 starting fussing and we had to make a getaway before people started giving us death glares. We finally ended up at the toy shop and by then, I was feeling guilty. I’m not quite sure why because my daughter already has more than she would ever need.
We had this conversation about wanting and needing. I told her that from here on, we will only be spending money on things that we need, not want. (Note to self – do not shop for clothes, bags and shoes in front of her). So I asked her with regards to the 3 things she requested for, if she needed them or wanted them. She admitted that they were all things she wanted.
Then at the toy shop, she said she needed lego people because she didn’t have any lego people and although she had lots of lego pieces to build lots of things, there were no people! And how could she possibly build buildings and ships and castles and buses and caves and shopping malls and swimming pools and islands and trains when there were no people to enjoy them?? And did you know that friend E, has lego people and he makes his own movies with the lego people through photography? She needed lego people so she could start making her own lego movies. All she had to do was to build a set, then set the people, take a shot, then move the people a bit, then take another shot and so on.
Bloody hell.
I was sold.
RM45 for 4 lego people.
