Training children to clean their own toys

T1 has this beautiful doll house that is every little girl’s dream, mine included, and I keep reminding her just how lucky she is to have this doll house. Lately though, she hardly has any time to play with it because of her demanding school schedule and other things, so we’ve decided to put it into storage since all it is doing is collecting dust. Also, T2 will soon be a toddler who puts everything into her mouth so it is hardly advisable to leave the doll house with all its little bits out for T2 to eat – toaster, books, painting, washing machine, iron, cups, you name it. They are smaller than the size of grapes!

We got T1 to clean her entire doll house, wipe all the dust away and then organise them into zip lock bags so we could put them into storage clean. So this is how she spent her Sunday morning.

Whilst doing that, the Hubs was grumbling that he had 3 princesses in the house and they always got what they wanted…..doll houses, handbags, French giraffes…..what about him? What did HE get? All he did was work to pay off his princesses bills.

So I tried pacifying him by telling him that it was a GREAT doll house that was well worth it because not only was it going to be shared by 3 users this generation i.e. me, T1 and T2, but if we kept it well, we could keep it for our children’s daughters too. What a bargain surely!

Then T1 asked, what if she didn’t get any daughters? I answered that well, perhaps T2 would have some daughters or else, we’ll just keep them for their granddaughters!!

Then she said, “No, I’m going to keep having kids until I get a daughter. So she can have my doll house.”

I quipped, “But are you sure you can support so many kids?” It’s very expensive having kids, you know. You have to pay for school fees, books, toys, and then what about all those extra classes that you want to go to? Drama, gym, piano? All that cost money.”

Very quickly, she had a solution, “Oh, I just won’t tell them about any of the classes. And we won’t go shopping.”

Shocked at her answer, “What?! So why don’t we just stop all your classes and pretend you don’t know about them now so we don’t have to pay for them anymore?!”

“No, it’s too late now. I already know about them.”
