Toddlers refusing medicine

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Tee has always been good with medicine since birth but this year when we went to Australia, the Doctor had prescribed an antibiotic which was unusually grainy and this started her hate journey with medicine. Even if it tastes okay now, she would resist it like I’m making her eat vomit.

I dread every single moment of her being sick because of the trauma we both have to endure with this medicine fiasco and this time is no different. Except that she’s older now.

Until last night, this is what has been happening……

We announce that it is medicine time and she runs amok around the home. We chase her round and round and round, all the while explaining all sorts of logical reasons to her. Then we start the threats. Bribes. More threats. More bribes. After an hour, we get a little exhausted and our voices start getting louder. And the threats more drastic. Then the crying begins. After which one of the below happens:-

  1. We tie her down, hands and all, whilst she screams and kicks, close her nose, press her cheeks and shove the syringe in. Potentially messy as she may spit or spill the meds out or kick something over. Too traumatising.
  2. She agrees to take the meds on condition that we give it to her drop by drop. So we squeeze a drop into her mouth, then she drinks 50ml of water. Another drop. Another 30ml of water. After about 200 drops and another hour later, we’re done. It takes fucking forever. And we’re left in a bad mood.

There must be an alternative to this!

  1. hey, same happens to qiqi too. I never had any prob with her since birth…and recently i really feel like strangling her with her silly attitude and nonsense!

  2. Chloe used to be like this too… I know how stressful it could be. *Hugs*

The last time I gave Chloe med for her fever, we came to an agreemnet where if she would finish her med in ONE shot, I would give whatever she demands, knowing she would ask for the forbidden chocs & sweets.

Perhaps you could negotiate with Tee on what rewards she would like after taking the med? Not sure if it would work or not as that’s the first time we won the battle. 🙂

  3. oh dear…wouldn’t the water wash down the medicine?? i somehow think so…especially cough medicine, doc advises against drinking water after feeding..hmmm but then again..i know how it’s like cos I too hate the taste of medicine!!! poor tee..hugz to her..get well soon!!!

  4. oh poor u and poor her…u actually tie her? with rope??? 😆

my 2nd girl also the same but i threaten with the cane! then she would request to feed the med herself. 🙂

  5. I went through that too. And I just cannot understand how I survived it. Maybe, ask Tee to choose between the medicine and the syringe? It works with my younger. Evil mummy I am.

Merry Christmas mama. To you and yours. 🙂

  6. So how much of the medicine was all over the two of you?!

We have the same mess here at medicine time. I also practice the nose pinching cheek grabbing technique. It’s the only way to go and when you consider the good it does them as opposed to their trauma… so be it.

  7. That’s how I feed my gals their med too sometimes… drop by drop followed by mouthfuls of ice-cream and cookies. Well, anything for them as long as they down their med!
