The Hubs is in Bahrain.
It is the kid and I.
Home alone.
I got a call this evening from Tee’s grandparents informing us that they will be in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow evening from 5pm to midnight for a long transit to Shanghai. They hinted for us to visit so they could see their ‘sing kang pow pay’. Only Hokkiens will know what this means. Or is it Mandarin? Duh….
My parents asked, “Why can’t they leave the airport and come into town for dinner?”
“Maybe they have heavy hand-luggage.”
“They could have come a day earlier to spend some time with Tee!”
Silence.
They are approaching 75 so maybe they are just too old, I reasoned. Or maybe they are just old-fashioned Chinese who believe that the younger ones should visit their elders and not the other way around.
It causes a problem for me because the thought of me and Tee parking in KL Sentral (no way am I spending two hours on a highway with Tee. Alone……), then spending $$$ to train it back and forth to the airport, only to play with them for an hour is just absurd. *sigh*
My darling brother, who is really the darling of brothers, has agreed to accompany us once he gets off work.
Should I go?
Or shouldn’t I?

Err… I would. Grumble like hell, but will still go. And you have escort summore.. 😀 Plus you get extra brownie points from hubs for being such a good DIL and entertaining his parents… (make sure he is aware of your extreme magnanimity!!)
I don’t know about your in-laws, but I know my MIL likes to tell ppl what a good DIL she has. So at times I will take time to do things for her, to make her look good, so to speak, in front of her relatives and friends!! And hubs is extremely happy when the 2 women in his life are happy with each other, hence wifey can have a free rein when going shopping!! 😆
Also, you want Tee to see actual filial piety, rather than read about it in some moral book. I have seen with my own eyes the consequence of dismissing the grandparents. This couple ended up with the kids moving to another country and they are all alone now. So I truly believe what goes around comes around!
i would be so disgruntled too but I would go. Think positive, that it will be a field trip for Tee, to the airport! And sitting on a train too. Exciting isn’t it? 🙂
hmmmm….i came too late for my comment to make any affect on your judgement. nevertheless, i will still like to comment. you should definitely go. without grumbling too. just imagine, when you are old and when families mean more than anything else, how do you want to be treated in turn? to us, it’s just a little more money, a little more of our time. to them, it’s a lifetime of memories, a world of difference. why else would they ask? it’ll be a million more times painful if they don’t regard tee as their ‘sing kang pow pay’, when tee have two less people in the world to love her. don’t go because you want tee to treat you like that latter in life, don’t go because it’s your duty, go…because you love them…and it’s the least you can do for them. don’t ask what they could have done to make it more tolerable, easier for you. ask what you can do for them. it’s a blessing to be loved.
