The old lady I wanted to save

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Back in the good ol’ free days when I had a lot of free time (Now? What’s free time?), I’d be the gallavanting Mother Theresa wannabe looking out for people I can help. During each summer vacation, I’d be loitering the streets with friends spending our nights entertaining ourselves silly. On one such night, two guys and I had a craving for A&W and went to the old train station for it. I immediately spotted this old lady (who looked no more than 75) who was walking around begging for food and everybody ignored her. Can you believe it? Everyobody ignored her!!! HOW RUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I couldn’t do that. So I gave her my meal and started talking to her with my half past six Cantonese. After trying several languages….

She had tatty clothes and looked a sight. Probably didn’t shower this century and carried a Jusco plastic bag of ??? Toiletries??? A change of clothes??? Scraps of stuff she thought she could sell???

From what little that we communicated, I understood that she was a destitute old lady without any family nor friends. Nor money. Nor a home. *sigh* How could I have left her that evening without doing anything, right?

I didn’t want to give her cash because what if she was a drug addict? My mother always said, if you want to help, give them real stuff. Not cash. Because you never know. You don’t want to be feeding a drug habit. But I needed to give her more than food that evening…..

So my friends and I, we called the whole world that evening at about 9pm, when half of KL was asleep and the other half too busy partying, and found her a home for the destitute out in PJ. The two guys I was with, they were stunned at what I was getting them involved in but were too scared to protest, so off we drove this amah to the home for the destitute. They had only agreed to allow her to stay for a few days until we found her a proper home. When we arrived, it was a terrace house ran by a lady who took care of teenaged girls, three to be exact, and only kindly agreed to this favour because I was so desperate. There was no way my parents would have allowed a stranger into their home. We left the old lady there that night and I reassured her that I would find her a home.

The next day, I called around the world again to search for a home for this old lady but everywhere was full! How can that be? I was SO angry and frustrated. I called the home where the lady was and got a report that she had eaten some biscuits and drank some milo. By evening, I had still not found her a home and when I called the home where she was again, the landlady told me that she had run away. What?!

How can that be? All thoughts streamed through my mind. Was she abused? Was she on drugs? Why didn’t she want a home? I questioned the landlady over and over again but she said that the old lady didn’t want to stay on anyway…….

*sigh*

I wonder what’s happened to the poor old lady……

  1. Oh it’s so nice to hear stories like this. You and your friends are such kind souls. The old lady was probably not used to staying in a home. Maybe she felt that she had no freedom there so she left.
