Within my family, there is Portuguese, Chinese, Indian, Malay, Kadazan, Japanese, Dutch (hello Francois *waving*), English and Indonesian (if you count my mother’s maid). 🙂
The definite advantage of having such a diverse coming together of races is surely the authentic home-cooked food that we all get to savour. It is a lovely merging of cultures and each other’s idiosyncrasies. Whenever there is an argument, there are countless points of views thrown in, sourcing from the root of each others respective cultures. The boundaries of ethics are different, the politeness scale poles apart (LOL), the ways in which they spend their money vary as priorities vary and upbringing of children are like chalk and cheese.
But the one thing that brings everyone together is that we are family. And despite family feuds, when it is time to behave, they usually manage to be within the same space without killing each other. Not everyone talks to everyone but at least they’re in the same space. Because even that, is something.
Another lovely advantage surely for Tee, is the many festivities that we get to celebrate! Of course, Tee is only interested right now in the superficial aspects of festivals. For Christmas, we have a Christmas tree with presents; for Chinese New Year, she gets Ang Pows; for Hari Raya, she gets Duit Raya and for everything else in between, we celebrate with great food. Any excuse to eat!
In time, I’d teach Tee about the true meanings of our lovely diverse cultures. I say in time, because I’ve tried and it doesn’t quite click in that little head of hers right now.
