Seems like months ago that I was last here but actually it has only been weeks. Allow me to give you the low down on what’s been happening at the Lee Mansion.
- I got shortlisted to write a coffee table book for the Government. It is an initiative to promote our capabilities to the rest of the world. At first I was really excited about it because hey, I am no writer. But as we met, discussed and went along, my enthusiasm dwindled. Reason being. I get the impression that the book is to serve a purpose other than what I have been told. Secondly, I’m not sure I can handle such a demanding job when I still have to care for T 24/7.
- My mother pissed me off for the 483rd time today. Friday is my half day off because my mother offers to take care of T. This Friday I told her I wanted to do some Christmas shopping since I havent done the Xmas circuit this last 2 years due to our strained financial situation. It means things are getting better. She suggests that we all go to the mall and she will attend to T whilst I carry on with my Christmas shopping. I knew this was a bad idea that would not work. I was right. She did the shopping. Not me.
- My daughter has picked up this phrase – “Don’t force me, Mummy…” If I tell her to drink some water, or make her finish a meal or request that she goes potty…..that is what I get after repeating my request a few times. What is a mother to do when a child says that in such a pityful tone and makes you feel as though you are abusing her? Smack the living daylights out of her or be even more creative in getting your way. It’s like a bloody corporate business, you know, bringing up toddlers.
- We still haven’t sold our house that’s been on the market for 2 months. What more, our tenant has taken off, hasn’t paid us and left the house in a bad state with a water tank leak that has destroyed the ceiling tiles and parquet flooring on the top floor. The fridge we left for them to use no longer works and we haven’t even checked the piano, a sentimental object left behind by my late grandfather. The Hubs is as cool as a cucumber because he claims everyone who buys property in this part of the world will renovate it thus our house in bad shape won’t matter. He told me not to worry. We shall see what happens when we get an interested buyer, shall we?
- I finally met my sister-in-law (the Hubs younger sister) from Arizona. Having met the rest of the family before, I wasn’t expecting much but she certainly surprised me. She is the most pleasant person by far in the Hub’s family, him included. T actually cried and ran into all the rooms looking for her after we sent her off, the day she left. I was so sad and it was at that point that I realised that my little T is really growing up and is so mature.
- We have a new chairperson at the volunteer organisation that I work with. Typically American, she is the 4D’s – dynamic, demanding, do-it-right-now and err….dramatic. I had made the stupid mistake of promising her early on that I would not abandon her in her term. Since then, I’ve had to deal with whining committee members, bitching office staff and unsupportive members. I feel like throwing the towel in BUT…….I just can’t do it. Nike, I have failed.
- I finally got my bra size measured!!! You know, ever since my first camisole bra at 12, I’ve never had the need to get my breasts professionally measured. All my life, I’ve fitted into a 34B and never had a single complaint from anyone they served. *wink* But when that little T bean started growing inside me, my cute peaches suddenly swelled into mini papayas! It’s been an inflatable journey of cup sizes ever since with bras that don’t quite fit so finally, even though I still plan to lose 10kg, it has been told to me that I am now a 36D. Believe me, it’s not as sexual as it sounds.
- T got 5 inches of hair chopped off!!! Yes. It was finally getting to us. I was tired of having an extra thing to do every other day and she was getting strangled by hair winding around her neck in her sleep so one fine day, without warning anyone, I took her to A Cut Above with those cute animal barber chairs and snip, snip, snip. It cost her RM25. What? Of course, she paid for it. She has more money in the bank than we both do, put together!
- We are spending Christmas Day on Gulf Air to Bahrain. It would be the first time that we spend Christmas day on a plane. It would be T’s and my first time to the Middle East. It would be T’s first time meeting my Italian bridesmaid friend, Elena. It would be our first time hiring a sky nanny (Gulf Air provides Sky Nannies to care and entertain your toddlers/children while you sleep away or watch a video, how cool is that?!). It would be my first time travelling alone with a toddler on a 9 hour flight. I’m all up for first times…..I may tell you all about the last times after the trip! Wish us luck.
- We finally decided to give T her pneumococcus virus jab after knowing someone’s son who actually got the virus and had to go through brain surgery and risk brain damage. Then within the same month, read an article about how Malaysian parents are ignorant about the pneumococcus virus since it is inherently rare in this part of the world. Yet, due to the fact that more and more foreigners are coming in everyday, it has truly arrived. One mother’s account was that she had spent 35 thousand dollars in attempt to keep her son alive from the deadly virus but in the end, it was futile. The mother urged parents to spend the 400 rather than 10 times more and then lose your child. We took her advice.
So now you know why it seemed like forever………..
