Tonight was her school’s annual Golden Globes Academy Awards ceremony and although her school doesn’t usually hold concerts for tots this young (2.5-3+ years old), they decided to because Tee and her partners in crime were a capable bunch. It was an informal affair with an eager audience of about 20 parents and it was Tee’s first time to perform on stage with her friends.
All those months of rehearsals, those exhibitionist displays of capability and talent, the hours spent on hand-sewing her concert costume; spiralled down the bog this evening when she refused, point blank REFUSED to perform. Funnily enough, at the last full dress rehearsal where I was present, she chose to be different and sat sullenly on the side of the stage, instead of shaking her booty up with the gang, which she does so well. Today again, she told me that she wasn’t going to perform. Why? Because she just didn’t want to.
So I prayed and prayed that the fairies would sprinkle some fairy dust on her to crack her strength of purpose. It turned out that the fairies were having a party out in Connecticut. Darn those Tinkerbells when I needed them most. Tee came onto stage with her costume but ran down just as fast when her radar identified the Hubs and I, switched on the moment she entered the assembly hall. No amount of gentleness and words got her back on stage. No amount of bribery was enough incentive to part with us. And I didn’t bother resorting to threats. My gut told me futility was near. My gut has never been wrong.
Throughout the whole hour performance of which her classmates did the school proud, my drama queen, ‘top student’ in her class, shrunk into a shy, insecure mouse refusing to speak, move, even whimper. What gives? To be fair, she hasn’t been feeling well but still! Tee, the noisiest and brashest, most outgoing student of all, decided to show her true colours in front of a whole audience. Our saving grace arrived when she finally agreed to go up to collect her graduation certificate at the end of the concert. And she was real shy doing that. I could tell from the body language of my little Teletubby.
The whole fiasco intimidated her. The presence of so many strangers in school scared her out of her comfort zone. And she wanted to leave immediately. Despite all that, I was still proud because she displayed a true sense of being my daughter. Talk big on the outside but a tiny mouse in reality.
“NO! I am NOT performing today!” *sulk*
