The choice of a lifetime partner

Tee thinks you can make babies through hugging in private. Then she wonders why there is no baby after she leaves you behind closed doors for twenty eight seconds. She is taught that you can only marry someone of the opposite sex outside your family and that you generally make babies after marriage. I don’t believe that, but try explaining gay marriages to a toddler. I certainly don’t want to be encouraging toddler sex either!

She wants to marry this boy in school who is real cute. I totally approve. Not because he is cute but he has the most wonderful sense of kindness, shyness and well, he’s darn cute. So far so good.

But what would I do if one day she came home with a nose ringed pot addict who’s been jobless for the last three years? What would you do?

When I was growing up, I had lots of boyfriends – many platonic, some with emotional roller-coasters. Mostly because my parents were never around to pay us much attention so I instinctively got it elsewhere. The attention. Yet my mother would stress that I find a man who loved me more than I loved him. What did that mean? How would you measure that?

Parents only want what is best for their children after all so it is natural that they are idealists when deciding whether or not to give their blessings in their children’s choice of lifetime partners. My mother has never been wrong about every single boyfriend I’ve had. There was an incident where I’d snuck a boy into my bedroom and he lived right under my parent’s roof without them knowing. Until that day when the maid snitched on us. All hell broke lose with mom turning into satan personified, searching my entire bedroom for that boy. He was under the bed. 🙂

Later, she explained that if he had really loved me, he should have had the balls to come out of hiding when she was yelling her head off at me. He should have apologised for his wrong doing. And he should have taken the blame for it and protected me. Even if it was both our sins.

Then there was another boy, who would hardly ever come to my place but expected me to hang out at his place instead. Mom felt there was no give and take in that relationship. No respect. She was right.

As we go through life, with the right teachings, we learn to respect ourselves more, learn of ourselves more, and learn what we may want in a lifetime partner. It is only then, when you truly know yourself and know what YOU want, that a right choice is made.

So if Tee were to ever bring someone home of questionable material, my first reaction would be to myself. I’d ask myself where I’d slipped. And since damage was already done, I’d offer her possible scenarios of what might happen. But leave the thinking to her. I don’t think people can be pushed into not loving another. I’ve seen parents disowning their children, leaving them with threats and causing trouble; when really it is themselves that needed the soul-searching.

Remember too, that your children are not yours. They are children of God, and you are merely here to equip them with the best of what life has to offer.
