Dear Tee,
Tonight when I put you to bed, I explained that you should not be sleeping with Mommy anymore because you are almost four years old and you immediately replied, “But I’m not four yet!”. At the rate time flies, you will be 4 in exactly 8 months. Shit. Really?
You have become increasingly fast with your comeback answers to my horror that I do not know whether to scold you or ask you to shut up, because many a time, I am just left in shock. At lunch today when I complained that there were so many flies, you asked me to shut all the windows so they wouldn’t come into the house! When I whinged that it was such a hot day, you suggested for me to have my drink with ice and to turn the fan on faster. When I was stuck without a phone in the rain one day not knowing what to do and needing to call Daddy, you suggested driving to someone’s house within the same vicinity to make the phone call. I didn’t even remember that that particular someone lived there!
Whenever I have a problem and mutter to myself, your persistently perked ears digests the information and yet another solution spews out from your little mouth. Like when I was contemplating the problematic logistics of where to go first and sequentially in order to complete all tasks in the stipulated time frame, you actually gave me some great ideas and I thank you. You are constantly offering solutions, even when not asked. I do not know where you get this trait from. School? Or do you just like showing off that you are miss smarty pants? Whatever the case, I do sometimes find it useful. Your memory is fantastic too. I’m always counting on you when we go grocery shopping or when I need to be reminded of a particular task the next day. All I have to do is ask you, and you will have the answer ready for me. Thank you for being my memory alarm clock.
You are also very observant and have extremely sharp eyes. It must be from all those carrots we’ve been forcing down your throat. You can find the tiniest of objects amongst a sea of gravel or notice that an eyebrow on somebody’s face isn’t identical. You get irritated when a thread is off someone’s clothing and cannot stand to see the faintest stain on anything, be it clothes, chairs, tables, curtains or bedsheets. This perfectionist trait and attention to detail is undoubtedly your Virgo blood doing its rounds. It drives me nuts as I am far from being the clean and neat freak that you demand me to be.
Today, after counting all your ang pow money, you suddenly said you wanted to give all your money to the poor children. You were not prompted nor asked in any way so I was really shocked that such a thought crossed your mind. My heart opened up and I seriously felt the warmth in it before realising that the poor children were your teddy bears. When I suggested that you gave your ang pow money to the REAL poor children, you shook your head. No, it’s for the fake poor children, you said. *oh dear* That reminded me that we still needed to spend some time with some less fortunate children so you would get some perspective.
You are increasingly manipulative as a child and put me on frequent guilt trips that do not work, mind you, although you keep trying your luck all the time. You tell me almost half the month that I am not spending enough time with you and that you lack attention. You even tell me that you really love me and to please play with you or you’d die from emotional starvation. I’m sure you haven’t the faintest clue what you’re saying but have picked it up from our conversations and even know how to put on your pitiest tone of voice. And your face, God, your sad face would send all of Asia into a deep depression.
Like tonight, when you didn’t want to finish your dinner, you looked all teary eyed and spoke softly that you were very tired and wanted to sleep straight away. I told you to wait in your high chair till the rest of us finished our dinner before we took you up, but you kept shifting around your seat pretending to be SOOOOOOOOOOOOO tired that your sucker of a father carried you up. Not more than ten minutes later, you were calling out for us with the excuse that my phone had a message that went ‘ting-tong’ so that woke you up. Sure. We really believe you. The next five minutes was spent jumping around like a frog with Kong-Kong and you didn’t sleep till 2 hours later.
You are also a very sensitive girl who constantly needs reminding that we love you and are sensitive to your surrounding environment. The moment anyone is even slightly angry, you know. Your drama act begins instantaneously and we try hard to resist but I must say, you’d win the Oscars with your eyes closed. I was just stung today when I was SO FRIGGING MAD when you totally ignored me when I called out to you and asked you to wait when you were running out onto the main road. No doubt, your aunty was there but the fact is, I, your mother, your ONLY mother, was calling out to you. And you chose to ignore me. I was SO UPSET and furious but I did not say anything because it was Chinese New Year today. Later this evening, I spoke to you about the incident, how upset I was, and you were all apologetic and pathetic, begging for Mommy’s hugs and kisses, tearing for it, asking why I didn’t love you anymore, blablablablablabla………..You even came up to me and voluntarily hugged and kissed me continuously like you thought I was dead and had just risen.
There is so much to say about you, my precious, but I shall leave it for another day.
Loving you always,
Mama xx
