Lessons my Mom taught me – Part 9 of 23

Many assume that my Mom converted to Islam because she married a Malay man, but the truth is, she converted long before that.

She was a sad and lonely woman in a dead end marriage seeking guidance, and Islam gave her that solace.

Why not Christianity?

Because she was molested by a priest at church.

(Throw no shade at Christianity. Predators exist in EVERY religion.)

As a Muslim woman, she prayed five times a day, which I thought was nuts. We’d be waiting around for her to finish her prayers before we could go out for meals, or couldn’t get her on her phone whilst she was always busy praying. But in the 80s, what did we know about religion?!?

I noticed this though….

For all the flack that Islam gets in the world, my Mom exemplified and embodied Islam so beautifully that I became really impressed with the teachings of the ORIGINAL religion, not what we see in general these days what with the self fulfilling agendas.

She lived islam with grace; no noise, no agenda.

So intentional.

Over the years, her love and discipline in the religion impressed me. Her heart was truly in the right place.

In fact, I even considered embracing the religion just because I saw a certain level of magical kindness in her that I could not find anywhere else.
