Tee’s music school has been very creative all this while in teaching toddlers the basics of music and movement but now that she’s advanced onto piano lessons, she is forgetful when it comes to learning her notes. The school feels that from statistics, a better approach is for the child to listen to the notes and sing them (there is a term for this but I’ve forgotten now) whilst looking at the notes on the piano book but obviously, this has not worked for Tee because she still needs to count the notes on the lines before she can know what it is. It’s just a matter of practise, I’m sure.
However, when I taught her MY way of learning the notes, the VISUAL way, she caught on immediately. If you drew out the notes on the treble and bass clef accordingly and separated them into lined notes and spaced notes, you will find that you have for treble clef spaced notes, the alphabets DFACEG. If you removed the top and bottom notes, you have FACE. I told her that this is the DIGI face and she clearly remembers the yellow men from the DIGI ads on TV plus she’s even met them several times real life, so this has stuck with her. She now knows her right hand spaced notes well. Digi face!!! And she finds it funny.
Now if you took the bass clef and did the same thing, you’d get FACEGB. Removing again the top and bottom notes F and B, we have ACEG which I translated to her as All Colours Except Green. Since green is her favourite colour, again, this is easy for her to remember. And since we have F and B and she knows the word Facebook, haha, we call it FaceBook’s All Colours Except Green.
You get the picture? It works! For my girl, at least…..Now she can sight read those notes easily on paper and knows her notes on the keys as every alternate note will give her the Digi Face and Facebook’s All Colours Except Green.
My point is…..every child has the capability to learn. You only need to tune your teaching approach to your individual child’s learning style, and always remember that every child is different. None of them are naughty or stupid. Adults just haven’t found the right approach on how to deal with them as individuals. It’s hard work, but worth every sweat trickle.
Until the next time Tee makes me explode!

Wow!! A great idea to teach a child to recognize the notes. Might come in handy when it’s time for my little girl to advance to her music theory lessons.
thanks for sharing this… i am struggling in teaching myself and my girl to recognize the notes… i have no music background, so you can imagine my stress.. coaching a young girl to play piano…
