When I first starting reading at 5, I was the first in class to read. At that time, everyone thought it was early and to this day, I have old family relatives remembering that I started reading at an early age. What the hell is early? 0_0

I’d always expected Tee to read early (since she has my genes, booya!) like maybe when she was 4.5 years old, thinking that 4.5 years old is pretty early for reading (and since kids are so much smarter these days). So I’ve never taught her how to read as I don’t even know where to begin. I just read a lot to her and I have no idea what they do at school. About 9 months ago, she’d already known her phonics because her school teaches them in such a fun way that it is just impossible not to not know it. Then, a month ago, we met her friend who was exactly the same age as her, and he could read!!!

I couldn’t believe it when I saw it and heard it and wanted to do fucking cartwheels all over Times Books Store because I was so proud of the boy. He was three years old and he could read, albeit word by word slowly, but hey, the boy had the mental capacity to string the alphabets to form words. At three years old! Maybe it’s just me, but that was such a WOW factor for me. I came home and raved on about the little genius to everyone and the next day, my daughter displays a sudden spiked interest in reading by herself. So competitive, huh? It must’ve really bugged her to see her Mama so impressed with someone elses kid.

After 3 weeks of reading to herself (I don’t know what she does, she just takes the book and starts reading aloud like real, although probably making up most of it) and asking me a lot of questions, what a particular word is etc; she got it. She can now read two and three letter words but hasn’t grasped the concept of breaking up a three syllable word yet. Yet sometimes she manages on a simple two syllable word.

Her school has always frowned upon the use of flash cards on the premise that flash cards only makes the child memorise the imagery of the words, and that it is more important to know the underlying method in working those alphabets. I’ve never used flash cards with her, can’t be bothered. In reality, every kid will eventually read. Whether they start at two or eight, they all eventually read. The one thing I’ve given to Tee is the cultivation of a reading habit. We read a lot. And we read a lot of rich books, not just simple Ladybird books but books with rich words. Sometimes, even I have to look up the dictionary. For that’s one thing I’ve learnt and that is, many people use simple words with their children because they think their children are little but use the word ‘insipid’ on a toddler and she’ll be using it in no time.

In our day to day activities, I try coming up with new words for Tee and she absolutely loves it. She even practises the word with her own initiative, which is fantastic because it means I have done the right thing. I have achieved in her the love of English, reading, vocabulary and the world. And in doing this, I myself am learning everyday.

Let’s hope this lasts…….

And I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t proud.
