Soon to be the new big sister

In less than 10 days, Tee’s entire life would change and she will be a new big sister. In exactly 12 days, she sits for her entrance assessment to big school. I have been advised that she will be completely bored doing Primary One work and should be pushed up to Primary Two.

Whilst I have resisted pushing her academically beyond her desires and capabilities, the pediatrician feels that it all boils down to a kids maturity levels and feels that Tee would thrive in a Primary Two class even though all the clicks and friends would have been made already in Primary One, and despite the fact that she’d be a completely new face in class, the pediatrician says Tee will have no problems at all fitting in. She’s confident, sociable, very determined and has even asked to be in the more difficult class than the easy class. This is such a difficult decision for me. I am really against Tee being in an environment where she may feel pressured to do better but some people around me say I will be holding her back and she may even end up resenting it.

I really am in no hurry for Tee to advance academically although I myself skipped 2 years, ending up being the youngest in class all my life, which I was completely fine with. Being the shortest girl in class throughout my school life never faced me either, haha!

The first 6 months in Primary One is spent learning number recognition and colouring and writing and learning some vocabulary, doing simple math…….which are all things Tee finds really boring. So far, whenever she complains that something is too boring, I allow her the easy way out. Like if an instruction says to copy and write the following words out, I allow her to skip the exercise as long as she understands what it is all about; or if it requires her to colour an object red, I tell her to just tick it red to show she understands and has the right answer but is just too lazy to colour the whole picture red. I’m sure this is a bad approach as it inculcates some lazy habits. Yet, I feel her time is better used in moving on to the more challenging exercises that she likes. However, just yesterday, I had a complaint from her teacher that she is mixing up her written alphabets ‘b’ and ‘d’ again and that she needed practice. HA!! I’ve now learnt that we really shouldn’t take the easy way out because practise makes perfect. It’s the Chinese School approach – repetition forms memory. I shall try it.

I also looked into her Primary One school’s Bahasa Malaysia syllabus and my, oh my…..it was really difficult! There will be no way she will thrive in Primary Two purely for the Bahasa, unless she starts now and brushes up her vocabulary. I guess we shall make a firmer decision when the time comes come year end and get the big school’s advice on it. *sigh* These poor young children…..so much work to do already at such a young age. There I go again, wavering towards my baby not growing up when she wants to so much. *sigh*

  1. Over here..they really look at how mature the kids are. They will hold back if they feel they can’t cope emotionally and socially. Tee sounds like a confident lil fler…she shud be able to cope with it well. If not…then she’ll just have to stay another year of Primary 2…WAKAKAKAKAKAKAKAKAK!

  2. hi dear … wow .. the journey is soon coming to an end … junior is going to be out soon .. all excited n happy n worried at the same time … hugzzz ..

i think it all depends whr u sending ur girl to .. chinese based .. kebangsaan .. or international school .. all are at different levels ..

good luck n keep us all posted.

  3. So, now that I’ve shared with you the world’s best scone recipe, you’ve gotta share with me the recipe for raising a whiz kid. Quick quick!! 😉

  4. What school will Tee be going to – kebangsaan, Chinese or private? Since she’s a talented and smart girl, I think she would fare well in a Chinese school. I think Tee will be a very loving big sister.

  5. Interesting stuff! I went to England this summer and had some afternoon tea and scones, and it was so delicious I figured I’d try make my own last weekend. I might have broken a few rules maybe – I found a tonne of random scone recipes here and made 5 different types! My friends were so happy when I brought them round for tea and scones. Terrific fun!
