For the longest time since I was pregnant with T2, I’d convinced myself that I probably wouldn’t have to deal with sibling squabbles for a while since the age difference between my two girls is quite significant – 5 years, but how wrong I was!
For one, my little chilli padi T2, although slower developmentally than her sister in speech and physical development, seems to have a brain that shoots faster and a temper that soars higher. Despite how tiny petite she is, she really commands the respect of being THE BIG BOSS in this humble family. She has the sweetest smile and the cheekiest grin yet can turn into a baby dragon if things don’t go her way and let me tell you, as a baby, she behaves like…..I don’t know. She has a brain that obviously thinks like an old soul and screams her frustrations like a mad woman and that is why, T1 keeps reminding people not to be deceived with T2’s cuteness. Heh.
Meet my new cleaner:
The ways in which my cleaner, T2, annoys her sister include:-
1. Placing her little bum on T1’s workbook when T1 is doing her homework on the floor….
2. Removing bookmarks from T1’s half read Famous Five books
3. Hiding the TV remote control in T1’s school bag or the dustbin. T1 gets little surprises every now and then at school when she finds Bob The Builder’s nuts and bolts in her school bag, etc.
4. Insisting on eating T1’s food ALL THE TIME and insists that T1 feeds her, not Mommy
5. Taking Mommy away from her for boob time or whatever…..
6. Using objects to poke at her sister e.g. if T1 is busy doing her work quietly or watching TV, T2 would just grab a crayon or a pen and poke it into T1’s ear…..or nose, then run away. I kid you not.
7. Drawing scribbles on T1’s belongings, like the DSi screen or precious books – with marker pens!
8. Tearing tissues or paper and leaving a trail all over her sister’s bedroom
9. Removing baby books from the home library shelf and leaving them strewn all over her sister’s bed
10. Randomly walking up to her sister and then biting or licking her
But despite all that, T1 still adores her sister to no end and defends her to the end of life. Yet having said that, T1 has her moments of annoying T2 too, for no reason at all but pure fun. What’s it with them? I tell myself to stay out of their sibling squabbles. I’m not interested. The only time I’d intervene is when and if T1 starts becoming too rough with the baby. Otherwise I cannot be bothered. And perhaps this is why T2 defends herself so well with T1. For a little thing who toddles and waddles, she can FIGHT her sister. And she has the loudest shrill!!
Nevertheless, I am amazed at these two, the amazing bond that they have. Something that I almost envy. They take turns reading to each other….
They share secrets and gang up on their parents….
And they will protect and care for each other for life.
I guess sibling squabbles are ok……..as long as they don’t involve me.

elder sis are always more generous and forgiving. Same goes to mine
Awww I wished I had a sister. Somehow boys don’t get all mushy-mushy like girls but they will miss each other when apart. Yet fight till the cows come home (Brad too!) when they are together. Like you said, I don’t intervene unless Brandon goes around with the toy hammer and starts hitting people!
6.5 years diff btwn my two girls and they still fight and argue. I’m reading this book recommended by a good friend – http://www.parentingideas.com.au/Teachers/Shop/Parenting-Library/Books/Why-First-Borns-Rule-the-World-and-Last-Borns-want
Interesting read! Check out his blog too, if you haven’t already.
