Selecting diapers for a newborn

Hmm….only 4 more weeks to go unless baby decides to come earlier. We’ve been talking about diapers of late. I don’t really care but the Hubs insists that a newborn baby should wear cloth diapers as it is more comfortable besides preserving the environment. I don’t have much experience with all the new options available for newborns now. When Tee was a baby, she wore cloth diapers and it was a nightmare for us washing those 14 cloth diapers every single day!!! Without any help.
But I’ve seen all those cute cloth diaper wrappings they have now but am not sure how they work. Would someone care to enlighten me? Because we really should plan for some diapers soon.

  1. i started cloth diaper only when confinement lady was around. Thereafter it’s disposable all the way.. madness to rinse, wash, dry, fold 2 diapers in a small condo.. 🙁
Good luck and yes, baby is more comfy with cloth diapers…

  2. Both my kids wore clothe diapers when they were babies. They only wore disposables at night and when we go out. More comfortable, more environmental friendly and healthier too(breathable skin).
But many of my friends’ babies are using 100% disposables and they are fine too… so really, it’s a personal choice.

  3. Errrrr…. actually, once they wee, u’d have to change…or else, nappy rash.

My rationale : The amount of soapsuds/washing/energy wasted = disposable nappies waste.

So..yup. That pretty much made my mind up on which way to go. 😉

sorry to all the greenies there… it really comes back to the same result. WASTE.

  4. Sit down and grab a snack, my comment is a book 🙂

I won’t lie to you it can be a whole lot of work if you don’t have a huge amount on hand. Yes these days they have a whole lot to choose from plus they are very stylish. The AIOs (All in Ones) are great but they can also cost a pretty penny. Line then up with cloth diaper inserts or something and they will last you for a few hours unless there is poop 🙂

If you just get diaper covers then get a whole lot of pre-folds and you should be okay.

Either one of the 2 mentioned are usually lined with PUL so it’s waterproof. I have both plus the ones I made that are all cloth.

Ashleigh is partially cloth diapered. When we go out I simply do not want to deal with a poopy cloth diaper so we have a stash of disposables in the house ALWAYS. Plus my husband cannot and will not deal with cloth.

Yes it is a personal choice and for me I actually noticed the child used to be happier in the cloth. There were times when she wouldn’t poop in the disposable but strangely enough as soon as I put her in the cloth, out came the poop. Don’t even ask. Maybe the cloth just felt great on her behind and relaxed her enough so it could come out. I thought that was funny as hell. She has never had a rash but I don’t know if the cloth is the reason. Frankly I think in most cases be it cloth or disposable, if you catch the mess quick enough before it really sits on the skin the rash could be avoided. That and the constant use of rash cream to prevent a rash outbreak.

As far the cost of laundry…. You wash them with your regular loads. Ewwwww? some say. Well you treat them once you change baby and wash the poopies out before you throw them in the cloth diaper pail. Either way, Wash on the weekends together with/without your regular loads. No biggie.

If you were really looking into this. Get some disposables in addition to some cloth and give it about 2 – 4 weeks to see if you want to deal with it. You may get into a suitable routine with the cloth….who knows? and like it a whole lot

There you have it. More than $0.02 huh! hehehehe

  5. I totally agree with Atasha. Megan is all cloth diaper. I like fitted and AIO ones, never like pocket 🙂
For babies under 3 months, i suggest u using flat diaper, you know, folding from cloth, because they still pee wholesome lot.
If u wear them cloth diaper on this stage of age, you’ll have abundant of laundry to do and buying so much cd will burn some hole on our pocket 🙂
