One day, I got up bright and early and brought the kids to town for a city walk. Walk? Did someone say WALK??? I swear, they almost had a heart attack. How often do you see our kids WALKING on the lack of pedestrian walkways amidst smelly bus fumes right smack in the KL city centre? I wanted them to experience what everyone else in KL who doesn’t have a car have to experience, and if you don’t study hard, well…..you won’t be able to afford a car.

So we went for a walk. I must admit, even for me, I was a newbie. I think the last time I set foot on the KL streets was when I was a teenager (without a car then!). T1 complained the whole way why she had to walk and T2 got to get carried…..T2 complained the whole way why she couldn’t walk and had to be carried…….the Hubs was not involved as he had to work in the office that weekend.

So we started off at the Istana Hotel and walked across the street to Jalan Sultan Ismail and made our way to the Chulan Monorail station. Hmmm…..it was my first  time on the Monorail. The first time I went on an LRT was probably when it first started! Anyway, LRT Dang Wangi Station after the Monorail……

They had the tallest escalator in town, I swear! It reminded me of Angel Tube Station in London that incidentally has the longest escalator in all of Europe. Perhaps Malaysia wanted to beat its RECORD. Below, the Malaysian escalator…..

We bought chips, no longer tickets.

And they were not inserted into any machine but merely scanned! Wah, so high tech now Malaysia…..my fear was always losing the chip.

Before we joined tens of fellow LRT travellers……some old man kindly allowed me a seat since I had T2 at the front and a knapsack of all their water bottles on my back.

Not only do they have tall escalators, they have long corridor tunnels!!! Uber cool, baybeh. We had to walk the entire corridor before we could get out.

Onto our first sight of the day, the beautiful Masjid Jamek (shit, I hope that’s what it was). It was my first time going into Masjid Jamek…….

And my first time having to rent one of those Burkhas in order to allow me entry into Masjid Jamek. Beside me is my cousin from Australia with the red scarf. I chose white, for purity. We are in a holy place after all, not a brothel. The mosque was so serene and truly beautiful…..we walked all around it and you really see a different part of KL within it looking out. What a wonderful experience.

After the mosque we were told the history of the Oriental Building, also known as the Radio Building (which in fact housed Radio Malaya back in the day of the 1940s!). The building was designed by A.O. Coltman in 1930, an Art Deco Architect who also contributed to buildings in KL such as the Odeon Cinema, OCBC Building nearby and the Medan Pasar Clock Tower.

If you look closely, you will see these circular discs that he used just like records. No one knows if they were intentional or a mere coincidence.

We walked for hours till we finally had lunch in Petaling Street and walked back to the Hotel where the Ozzies stayed. The girls were SO HAPPY. My cousin bought them some hair bands from Petaling Street and they had ice-cream straight away! I hope they learn to appreciate more how lucky they are compared to many other KL-lites out there. I will update more on our individual adventures on the walk in separate posts. The walk made me see KL in a completely different light and made me love my country even more. There really is so much in KL, we just don’t know it.
