National Day in Malaysia

Today is Merdeka (which is Malaysia’s National Day) and I am disappointed to state that my mood is not very nationalistic right now.

Just yesterday, the Hubs was swimming with Tee at our local club, THE local club, the club where educated people are members.

While carrying her to the shower after their swim, with bag, towel and a floatie in tow, he slipped down a stair (which was not even perpendicular so I should really call it the banana skin slide mini ski slope fucking stair acrobat practice stair. Hey, welcome to Malaysia! – the land of the corrupt construction industry and others). In attempt to protect our precious Tee, he manoeuvred his fall ala Jackie Chan so she landed on top of him and not below. Phew!

Nevertheless, she was shaken from her first experience of weightlessness, even if it was only a five foot drop. She didn’t cry…. till she saw the Hubs expressions of pain and naturally the cursing that followed.

She hugged him and kissed him and patted him, “Daddy feel better, Daddy feel better?” as the Hubs slowly picked himself off the ground and held her. Believe me, after the twin towers and an elephant drop onto you, that is no easy task. The Hubs had his entire arm swell like a helium balloon. Good thing he didn’t start floating…

Not one of the fifteen adults or so that were in the poolside who watched the whole episode unfold and progress, lifted their body to help pick up the dropped bag with Tee’s paraphernalia. They just stared and watched in awe…… like the Hubs and Tee were famous celebrities acting for a TV commercial clip.

Not one person came over to ask, “Are you OK?”

Now, I pride myself as a Malaysian and for a long time thought we had the friendliest people on Earth. Welcome to Malaysia………the land of smiles.

These days I don’t see so many smiles.

Over past years, the streets of KL always flooded with merry people celebrating Merdeka Day with whistles, flags, booze and fireworks; not necessarily in that order. Noises of jubilation hit the air from early evening till wee hours of the morning and roads disappeared whilst parking lots formed throughout town. People scrambled around happily with any excuse to party, and party we did!

This year, from our hotel suite up high, we saw road! Lots of it! And there were no people. Where was everyone? Was there a national state of emergency that we weren’t aware of? Hints of people were spotted walking to get their ride home but that was it. There was no noise either. We suddenly panicked and wondered if we’d gotten our dates wrong. (reason we stayed at the hotel was so Tee could watch the fireworks, like we do every year). By eleven forty five, we were sure Malaysia was experiencing some life-changing evolution, of which sort though yet to be known.

Then at two minutes past midnight, we heard some fireworks coming from somewhere. But not where they were supposed to erupt. Five minutes later, a spring of light burst into the sky from another location. Tee kept hearing but she wasn’t seeing. After much bafflement, finally and thankfully, KLCC did us proud by shooting a fifteen minute display of flying brightly lit crayons configured in various fun shapes, painting the Merdeka sky. In true Malaysian fashion, the fireworks all over KL came out at different times, totally uncoordinated. It turns out, all roads in town had been closed this year. But still, where were the people?

Perhaps I’m not the only one not feeling nationalistic, huh?
