My masseuses’ predicament

I have had my masseuse for 3 months now on a weekly basis and truly believe that regular massage is a great way of having a great pregnancy. This (apart from the first four months of violent puking) has been a much easier pregnancy than my last. I’m not swelling up in the least even though I’m already at my 3rd trimester. No varicose veins, no stretch marks, no heart burn, no constipation, no diarhea……just gestational diabetes.

My masseuse, she’s a fine lady. Educated in Convent Bukit Nenas, she speaks good English, studied nursing in the UK, she knows the anatomy well, worked in the UK, Saudi and Hong Kong, she is worldly and smart. Plus she is a fully qualified beautician and body therapist with CIDESCO qualifications to teach. Yet she only charges RM120 for 2 hours. Many a time, this 2 hour massage runs into a 3 hour massage or more. I have tried offering her more money. She refuses to accept. Whenever I don’t have exact change and tell her to keep the change, she refuses to accept. It’s driving me nuts! I am so thankful to her for taking my pain away. I really am and I want to give her something back to show my appreciation.

The only reason she is in KL right now is because her mother who’s in her eighties is bed-ridden after having suffered from a stroke. She has no other family members so my masseuse is taking care of her single-handedly. Unfortunately, she cannot do nursing in Malaysia because it doesn’t pay enough to support both her and her mother. She has tons of credit card bills that were incurred when her Mom was hospitalised and needed operation after operation. She has to massage. Her mother was a masseuse to olden day high society and has passed on her art to her daughter. My masseuse has been massaging for 17 years and really knows the ins and outs of fixing an ailment.

She told me the other day that she needs another 2-3 clients to help support her income but unfortunately people in KL do not put a high value in massage. She found that Singaporeans and Honkies were more open to paying for massage, as were Westerners only because it was cheap to them. But Malaysians, for some reason, do not value themselves enough to take their health seriously. Why would anyone pay for an amateur spa masseuse (even if the atmosphere is super lovely) when you can have a really good therapeutic neuro-muscular massage that enhances your health at the comforts of your own home?

I was shocked at her comments (because to me, everyone loves massage and it would be easy for her to find clients) and then told her that I’d try to help her out by asking some of my friends. Well, guess what? She was right! Everyone talks about loving massages but when it comes to making a commitment, all goes quiet.

I suggested to my masseuse that she should start a business to get more income. Perhaps a medical assistant training school or even a massage school, but she said it wasn’t so easy without any capital.

Oh well, I am hard bent on helping her out so I shall make flyers for her and distribute it to all one hundred pigeon holes in my apartment. It’s the least I can do and if that doesn’t work, I’ll put it in more pigeon holes in other apartments. I want her to get her quota of 2-3 more clients. You wouldn’t have expected it to be so difficult, eh?
