Making Kids Work

I was brought up with maids and hardly lifted a finger to do any work. OK, make that no work at all. This has caused me to be extremely LAZY. However, my in-laws are extremely HARD-WORKING people and tend to their huge garden every single day. Their garden is about 50,000 square feet – it can fit a life size soccer field within it. Can you imagine 2 old people above 75 years old still watering a million plants, climbing trees with a ladder to pluck fruits, plucking weeds and no, they do not have a gardener. At all. They do it all themselves. They have a maid, but she takes care of the house and the dog. But perhaps it is their hard work that keeps them alert and alive!

So. I am determined that my children know how to work. Being lazy is such a waste of time. I see it in me. I see it in my brothers. We definitely have the lazy genes. I already see it in T1! But I’m determined to change this laziness habit by making her do more work. More work as in pick up her books, take her dishes to the kitchen, set the table, help her sister, carry things, you name it.

In Kota Bharu, she was very happy to do work because it was fun. She helped Ama water some small plants……

.

She pulled weeds…………

.

She raked them……..

.

Amah and Kong-Kong’s garden is separated by a fence into the ‘other’ garden (or the orchard, where all the fruit trees and herbs and vegetables are). The fence also acts as a barrier to keep the dog at bay, especially when there are guests, like a big play pan…..or a big outdoor kennel. Lucky dog!

.

The truth of the matter is, nothing comes free in Kota Bharu. We all have to work for food……Booyah!
