Loyalty and trust, hand in hand

Mom thinking

Lessons My Mom Taught Me – Part 6 of 23

LOYALTY will always be found in the things you regret because it mattered ??

I had just graduated and returned from London as a design architect when one of Mom’s male friends, a retired race car driver, wanted me to do a concept design for a clubhouse on his big plot of land.

Mom said no immediately.

But I said yes even faster. ?

It was my first opportunity back home!

He hadn’t given me any agreement of any sort but verbally promised I would be handsomely rewarded for my work.

He and Mom were friends, right?

Mom vehemently tried again to put a stop to this partnership stating clearly that he could not be trusted, looking me straight in the eyes, and defiantly, I would meet with my ‘client’ behind her back to get on with the project.

I didn’t want to hear it. Whatever happened between her and him had nothing to do with me. This was my first real project. I was ecstatic AF.

He was Charming. Confident. Successful.

And me, fresh out of The Bartlett, thought I could wing an opportunity better than anyone else; even my own mother. ?

Loyalty and trust

When she found out, we had a HUGE argument about LOYALTY.

She stressed I was HER daughter and I should be LOYAL and TRUST her as a Mother, that she knew what was best and that she was only trying to protect me from someone who had no intention of paying me for ANYTHING!!

I told her it was fine if he didn’t pay me anything as this was my very first project anyway, so I was OK to do it for free.

I, on the other hand was very confident that he was going to pay me as he did explain that Mom was just being extra protective of her only daughter.

Looking back, it wasn’t even about the money. Sure, a few thousand would have been nice small change to cover my expenses but it was more about being seen. About making my own money. About proving something….

Being young and impressionable, my ‘client’ took me for a spin in his sports car and I had never felt so confident in a fast car. The way the engine roared and how he showed me his swift car moves made me feel like I was finally in the driver’s seat of this adult world.

I felt powerful and ready.

I had the best time designing this project and put my whole heart into it, lapped up all the compliments that came for my work…. He even told me in front of Mom’s other friends that I had a rare talent. That this would be ‘just the beginning.’

And then.

After 4 months of completing the drawings for his clubhouse design, I submitted them proudly and he thanked me, promising a payment soon after he’d return from his travels.

I never heard from him again.

But I heard my mother’s voice.

I didn’t dare tell her.

From that day onwards, I trusted my Mom TOTALLY over every single little thing.

With EVERY cell in my body.

Over EVERY man.

With EVERY job choice.

And EVERY decision that needed a deeper knowing.

As the Chinese proverb goes :

I have eaten more salt than you have eaten rice…

This couldn’t be more true.

For all the ways I went against my late Mom thinking I was more clever and knew better, because what do older people know about the latest of anything anyways; she had proven me wrong time and time and again. ?

I never got paid but I paid a price.

And it bought me one of the most sacred lessons of my life :

NEVER bet against your mother’s wisdom.

No matter how much you think she is wrong.

The wisdom my Mom held from her years of experience was no match for a fresh 20+ year old, even if she’d graduated from a good University.

If you ever think you hold more wisdom than your own mother, you are very, VERY mistaken.

When it comes to LOYALTY, the greatest heartbreak is realising you gave it to the wrong person.

Now, my LOYALTY meter has broken through the roof as the most loyal human being when you are inside my circle.

Thank you, Mom ??
