Little Girls needing to pee frequently

In the last few days, I’ve noticed that Tee goes to the toilet a helluva lot despite the fact that she doesn’t drink very much. This worries me because my immediate concern is that she has a urinary tract infection. But she claims it does not hurt at all, she just has to go a lot but each time she goes, hardly anything comes out *sigh*

I deduced that perhaps it is because she does not drink enough that she is having this problem or maybe it is her bad habit of holding in her pee (you know how it is, playing is WAYYYYYYyyyyyyyy more important than going to the washroom) that her pee muscles are reacting to this bad habit *sigh*

Finally, I did some research and discovered some reasons why she may be having this problem:

  1. Urinary Tract Infection – symptoms include frequent peeing, urgent peeing (need to go like NOW! all the time), fever and abdominal pain.
  2. Vulvovaginitis – symptoms include frequency of peeing and pain during pee caused by skin irritation around the vagina. Before puberty, preschooler’s skin around the vaginal area is very sensitive and can easily become inflamed when contacted with even diluted soap, bubble bath and shampoo. Another possible reason for this is poor toilet hygiene as at that age, they are more interested in playing than wiping their pee properly.
  3. Pollakuria – symptoms include frequent daytime urination up to 10-30 times a day with very small amounts produced each time. Girls with pollakuria usually do not have any other symptoms and it is not known what causes it although some relate it to stress. Pollakuria usually goes away by itself and is also known as Extraordinary Daytime Urinary Frequency Syndrome.
  4. Voiding Dysfunction – when a child does not empty her bladder completely each time, her urine muscles tend to slack and this means that over time, she is not able to empty her bladder completely anymore, causing her to want to go more often. Typical kids – they just go to the washroom to relieve a bit of pee and off they go to play!
  5. Diabetes – Oh God, please no! A child with diabetes will have similar symptoms to an adult with diabetes.
  6. Child pregnancy – Oh God, please NO!!! Ditto.
  7. New Toilet Fetish – *faint* symptoms include wanting to see toilet walls more than any other wall in the house.

I shall monitor her pee sessions from here on and take her to the Doctor if it does not go away within the next 2 weeks. Anyone else had this problem?

  1. I had this experience with JS before , and it lasted for quite a while and it only happened during bedtime. Every 5 minutes or less she would go sit on the potty and the pee is just a few droplets. There is no pain or foul smell. Had consulted the doc, after checking JS , he said nothing to be concerned. Somehow, she outgrown that without any action taken.

  2. Hey!

    I’m a new reader..:)
Yes, my daughter who is 6 has been doing it too. I’m thinking of taking her to the doctor because it’s been going on for a week now.

  3. qiqi has got itchiness prob frequently. poor girl, once she bleed and i had to bring her see a pead (lying there opened up!) other than that, nothing else we encounter so far. Hope Tee will be fine soon.

  4. I’ve the same situation with my Angel!

Brought her to see a doctor once as she complained of ‘pain’ while peeing and it was a mild UTI after doing a urine test.

Doc recommended a salt bath, clean up after peeing and drinking loads of water.

I thought it’s just my daughter with this problem. Seems like girls her age just hold their pee when they play?! It’s such a bad habit though and I don’t know how to stop it! Very frustrating!

  5. My 4yo girl has that problem too but mainly at night. Recently we took a 4 hr flight and she went to the toilet 7 times!! I suspect that she wanted play use the hand sanitizer provided in the toilet.

It also happen during meal time, very frustrating when we are out. Then I decided to tell her to try hold her pee a bit, then the frequency has actually came down.
