Learn to DIY ….. EVERYTHING you LOVE

This is hands-down one of the BEST advice I ever received.

As a teenager, I used to break open electronics just to understand how things worked so I wasn’t at the mercy of Low Yat Plaza’s opening hours.

Yes, I was THAT kid.

Mom said, whatever you cannot do but want or need, do it yourself. Find out. Learn it. The less dependent you are on others, the better for you. Everything can be learnt.

When I went to the UK and certain foods could not be found, I learnt how to cook them myself.

Now, my girls learn how to cook the food they like themselves too!!

This literally means :

IN DEMAND, ON DEMAND.

It is the best life skill ever!!

My mom? She was the original DIY Queen.

She could transform any outfit with her bare hands; adding sequins, beads, and a creative flair that turned any outfit I was ready to give away into a show stopper. She even sewed one of my wedding gowns.

She was my makeup stylist, seamstress, chef and magician all in one.

Whatever we loved eating as a family, she would learn to cook and bake until the dish was perfect. After that, it was just rinse and repeat. True mastery through love and persistence.

She was independent to the core because I guess this is what you do when you have had enough waiting for others. When I got my first car, she made sure I knew how to change the tires because, “You never know when you’ll need to do it….”

Somewhere along the way, however, I swapped the spanner for a Tiara to become a Princess.

And guess what? So did Mom.

She mastered the art of how to remote control everyone with the delegate button.

And so, her legacy continues….

Generation after generation.
