Learning alphabetical blends

For the longest time, Tee has known her alphabets and her phonics to the point that her teacher at school is convinced that I’ve been sending her for Kumon classes – what is that?! Little does she know that Tee learnt her alphabetical phonics from www.starfall.com haha!! Yup, when Mommy doesn’t want to be disturbed, Mommy used to turn on the computer for her to play. This is really bad for kids because it will kill their eyes but desperate times call for desperate measures. Still, something good came out of it.

Today, a Mom told me that her son at Primary One still has trouble reading and doesn’t know all his blends, what more, he is struggling with the Malay language, on top of Mandarin. Poor kids! So much to learn!!! So the Mom is really struggling as well trying to coach him to catch up. This got me thinking……Fuck, this parenting thing doesn’t get any easier. It just gets worse!!!

I resolved to teach Tee two blends today since I haven’t taught her anything in the last four months. Well she goes to school, right? *shies away from critical glares*

I taught her CH and OO. I asked her what the sound of each individual letter was. Then I explained to her that sometimes, the alphabets can get married, and when they get married, their sound changes! Then I changed my voice and pretended to be Mr C and Miss H and they meet and fall in love and get married. Tee is mature enough to understand the concept of marriage thus the marriage story. And then O and O were twin brothers. They held hands to school together, they played ball together and their favourite expression was “OOOOOOO”. She had so much fun! And guess what? It clicked.

Now I’m thinking…….I could potentially be a school teacher. *nodding head*

Although it was really not necessary for me to teach her two blends today, I thought well, this is going to be my quality time with her today. And there was no pressure, just fun, and to her, Mommy was playing with her. Man, killing two birds with one stone is definitely my thing.

  1. don’t worry, I won’t glare at you.. my younger girl brings back homework from school everyday and I teach her how to complete the homework, whatever it may be. Otherwise I never ever open a book with her… not to mention “teach” her! I have patience as thin as ice, I cannot teach!

And I feel so guilty about it… until I look at my 7-yr-old, who seems to know everything that is being taught in school, even with VERY little guidance from me. Now, that is when I know, I am right in taking it easy.

Don’t make life so hard for yourself, and for the child lor.. that’s my motto.. 🙂
