Join Dove to raise self esteem

When I first saw posters of beautiful women at the back of some public washroom doors several months back, I was relieved that someone was finally doing something about it. ‘It‘ being the start of putting an end to commercial messages using toothpick bodies as talents as opposed to ‘real’ women. The advertising world has moulded society into thinking thin is beautiful and has all these preconceptions about what beautiful is. It wasn’t fair.

I know a medical surgeon from London who is succesful, tall and pretty and everyone who knows her would imagine that she had the perfect life but guess what? She had battled with anorexia for 15 years of her life till she met her husband. Even now, she has think fat moments and goes on a treadmill frenzy. Then there is the succesful financial analyst with lots of money but who is totally self absorbed, insecure and emotional and as a result, cuts herself to release pain. What about the pretty young accountant who never believes that she can do anything well and in fact believes strongly that she is just not very smart or the teenaged girl who doesn’t talk much because her family makes fun of her tanned olive skin? These are real life ludicrous incidences that can be avoided or at least have it’s effects lessened.

I am genuinely grateful to Dove for taking a stance on the subject that beauty is from within and not the stereotypical image that the media keeps throwing at our faces. The Dove project aims to improve the confidence and self esteem of young women the world over and proposes to reach at least 10 million females by the year 2010. But they cannot do this alone.

By spreading this message and by opening up and sharing your own struggles with loving yourself, you are helping another person. This is exactly what Dove has; an online diary of real life stories with a forum for discussion. You can donate and help Dove further implement the project, spread the word or you could do nothing. The choice of making a difference is entirely yours.
