Invitation by NASA

It’s official. A few weeks ago, the Hubs got an invitation by NASA of the US of A to witness the next rocket launch at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. With front row seats!!!

Now for those of you who know the Hubs, you’ll know that it was his ambition to become an astronaut, but twenty years ago, the idea of a Malaysian astronaut was really far fetched. Actually, it still is………*giggle*. So going to watch a real rocket launch is as close to his dream as the Hubs can get. Did you ever have a dream that big?

NASA is sending a space shuttle up on the 24th April this year to bring along another part in building the international space station and the Hubs has a childhood friend, an astronaut, who will be in that space shuttle going up. Hence the invitation. If you want to learn more, go to the NASA website.

We initially planned a trip to Europe for September but now that this has come up, I’m not sure if we can afford both although we might just credit card it (Oh God!) and then sell our souls again to pay it off. It will cost us at least RM40,000 to go to America. It’s a lot of money and it’s a big decision. But how many times do you get to watch a rocket launch with front row seats???!!!

Tee is already super-excited about watching the rocket launch that she’s not even interested in Disneyland! And we don’t even know if children are allowed in as their eardrums may explode. It’s probably going to be more like the Hubs getting the front row seat and Tee and I watching it from a safe distance. Baa…..

So whilst the Hubs books the air tickets to New York/Florida, I have been assigned the task to research Hotel Guides and find us the cheapest way to make a trip there. It’s a 49 hour journey door-to-door and I am so looking forward to travelling with a three year old toddler. In fact, I’m ecstatic. I must remember to bring baby valium.

I’ve read that Orlando has proven to be one of America’s best vacation spots so I’m glad it’s there we’re going and not somewhere else. On average, we’re looking to spend USD120 per night at an Orlando hotel but it would be so perfect if we knew people there who could offer us free accommodation. We’ll probably end up at the JW Marriott since we have friends who stayed there before and say it’s good. In New York, we’re set. The Hubs has so many friends there that we could live anywhere in Manhattan, although none of them have kids. And Tee will only reaffirm their lack of desire to have any. Ever.

There is a slight possibility though that the rocket won’t launch at the specified date due to weather conditions. In that case, it is possible that we go all the way there only to miss such a big event. Would you go then if you had to take that risk? We were still planning a trip to New York ONE FINE DAY since the Hubs wanted to visit all his old drinking buddies but we didn’t expect it to be so soon. And definitely not when Tee is only three. *faint*

So you Florida and New York people! Tell me more, tell me all I need to know!

  1. be prepared to stay at home (yr host’s small apt) while yr hubs go drinking with his buddies. You guys will be suffering jet lag for at least 5 days. So confirmed coming ah?

  2. I would still go. Even if the launch doesn’t happen, it’s still fun to visit Kennedy Space Center. Of course, there’s Disney, SeaWorld, Universal and lots of OUTLET MALLS!! We did the FL/NY/KL trip when C was 1 and we survived! Too bad I dun live in FL anymore. I used to live abt 2 hrs away from Orlando. 🙂

  3. Yeah. Not launching on the planned date is quite a high possibility lor.. I remembered that when we were there, the launch was postponed to a couple of days later. But since we were there for two weeks, we did managed to watch it from afar. So, I would still say GO! GO! GO!

  4. ooo…that’s so cool 😀 You could get cheaper hotels in Orlando which are not in Disney World itself. However you may need to rent a car and drive to Disney World and all the outlet malls there 😉

  5. ooohhh!!

Orlando, Florida!! How I would love to go. In fact, this year is “supposed” to be the year that the family goes off for vacay in Orlando.. the planning doesn’t look so good right now.. but hey, it’s still January and I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

The front row seats to a rocket launch is totally a once in a lifetime opportunity! You guys should definitely go!! And I could weep here until you guys come back! LOL!
