Why am I successful? Pardon my arrogance but I am successful because I was kicked in the ass early enough to wake up to the masses of the real world. It started at University. Just after I’d graduated, I took on an architectural job in England and was given the task to draw out some plug points on a drawing which represented a wall. Not realising the importance of scale and measurement without computers back in the day, my lines were lackadaisical of nature and I got shouted at by my boss. Big time.
That day I learnt that every millimetre counted. Similarly, the words that we use on a daily basis, have effect and impact on the ones who surround us. The tonation of the word changes everything in the delivery and understanding of the recipient. Hence I became a marketing expert because very quickly from construction, I learnt sales and marketing in the construction industry, and then reinforced by a strong sales driven British company trained to death with fortnightly changes that threw all staff off their balconies, I survived. I once heard an Australian MD say that if you’ve ever worked for Regus, you could work ANYWHERE.
So forgive me if I appear Nazi.
It is how I have been trained towards excellence. In my camp, we do not sleep till the job gets done. And not just done but done FABULOUSLY. And what is the benchmark of fabulous? We compete globally. Being the best in Malaysia isn’t enough. We have to be top tier globally. THAT is the standard I strive towards every single day.
Not everyone wants this of course and not everyone is even cut out for it and that is OK. But can I just be honest to say that my heart cries every time I am exposed to the level of education and skills of human resource in Malaysia? I keep telling myself, next year, stop work. Stop work so I can go do something for my country. At the rate we are growing our people, we are just moving further and further behind the rest of the world. It is so sad.
If nothing is done, my kids probably won’t have a future in Malaysia. My daughter is already eyeing her penthouse in Manhattan. Malaysia is such a beautiful country. We have the best food. We could make SO MUCH MONEY from the world but instead…..
Anyway, we trudge on. Baby steps. Let’s make things better.
Ultimately, this is all about contribution. Life fulfilment is all about contribution.
