We recently went out to Ikea to buy 2 Ikea Raskog Trolleys throwing us back by about RM500. Why? Well, as T1 is now at home and doing her school work from home, she has been messy with her books leaving them all over the place but when I complain about it, she says she has too many school books and her work desk isn’t big enough. It’s true. She really had nowhere to store her entire book list so I thought the Ikea Raskog trolley would be ideal for her to place her school books and she could push them wherever she wanted to. Some days, she worked on the dining table, some days on her work desk, some days on her bed, some days on the floor, some days on the couch…..the benefits of homeschooling.
And of course, since I was getting one for T1, I naturally had to get 1 for T2 as well. If it was something else, such as a Monopoly game, it would have been fine; but to buy T1 a trolley, something that a 4 year old would derive such joy out of, I just had to do it. For me, it is endless entertainment for the little one and as long as she is out of my hair, I’d happily invest the RM 250 or whatever it was.
And because the girls were super impatient and wanting their brand new trolleys the moment they awoke the next morning, I made them build it themselves. Well, T2 had no clue, of course, so she was lucky enough to have Mama’s help, but T1 was on her own. Good thing for Lego or she’d be plenty stuck. I’m proud of her that she managed to fix the Ikea Raskog Trolley entirely by herself without any help. I was even MORE proud of her that she thought of putting a round pencil into the trolley to ensure that each trolley was leveled and completely parallel to the floor. She told me, “Mom, if the pencil rolls to any side, it means the trolley basket isn’t leveled and you need to adjust the screws until it’s leveled and the pencil no longer moves in any direction.”
Wow. Where the heck did she learn that from? And why the heck did I not think of that???
Once she was done, she said, “Hey, Mom. Don’t you think I did great? I mean, I did that in 45 minutes and I am not a boy.”
Hang on. What did she mean? Was she implying that girls couldn’t do these kinds of fixing? So I probed her further.
“Well, it’s just that Daddy is always fixing everything so you know, it’s more a guys kind of thing to be fixing. But we did great as we’re girls!”
Hmm.
I made it my mission then to ensure that she understood that there was no gender bias in performing any task in this world, girl or boy, both could be just as good. And that there was no ceiling to being a girl either. In fact, I personally felt girls were not only smarter but much more resourceful and that they could multi-task and were also extremely capable whether or not they let on to be.
I think she got it.
T2, on the other hand, was just thrilled that she had the trolley fixed and started carting her patients around the hospital.
See? I knew she was going to have loads of fun with it. And when she does get older, she will also put her stationery and whatever else on it as a necessary mobile storage unit. The Ikea Raskog Trolley – now if only they had baby pink. Why did they not think of that?!!!??
