Ideas For Play – the restaurant owner

More often than not, my kids are pretty independent. Not more than 5 times in my entire life have I heard T1 say she was bored, and when she did, I told her that only boring people get bored. If she had the capacity to get bored, it only meant she was not challenging her own brain to come up with something to do that would keep her happy, stimulated and occupied!

And since I am lucky (or unlucky) enough to have a girl that does not like losing, she will eventually start her own little game or activity. In line with her school ethos, I encourage her all the time to have an entrepreneurial mind – it is but good practice to start young; the value of money, the foresight to jump at an opportunity and the eagerness to learn for life. Of course, it is given that a strong foundation of manners and dignified values be ingrained in the larger scheme of things.

If you haven’t done this yet and your 5-6-7-8-9-10 to 20 year old child ever complains he or she is bored, make her ‘pretend’ start and run a restaurant. What kind of restaurant is it? Where is it located? What is its customer base? What does the restaurant serve? How much are the prices of food? How do the prices compare with other restaurants? Who are its competitors? What is the restaurant’s name? How will she promote it? What is the back up plan if nobody comes for a week? What kind of staff will she employ? What would she do when the chef doesn’t turn up for work? What are the 3 most special things about her restaurant? What is the menu like? DESIGN the menu…….

Challenge them more if you think they have the capacity to be challenged. Why should people attend their restaurant? Keep challenging them and see how far they get. I have a lot of fun with T1 with these type of games, because I’m one mean Mama who will not let my kids win unless deservedly so. And the best part? It kept her occupied for a whole 2 hours before I needed to get involved.

That’s ma’ private me time, yo!
