I was watching the BBC weather report yesterday and good lord, it’s frigging freezing all over Europe, colder than ever! I thanked the angels that I was more than 9,000 miles away so as not to bump into a snowman at every twenty yards or so but I really sympathised with all the people there who were feeling the bite of cold, what more with Russia cutting off their gas supply. You haven’t heard? Temperatures are in the minus tens at night and very low degrees Celsius during the day. Ouch! And now they even have limited gas to warm up their heaters…….
If you are unfortunate enough to be traveling to Europe this time of the year, please take my advice and dress right. Here are some tips:-
Wear thermal underwear or a base layer that sticks to your skin. This will keep your body temperature regulated. Preferably, wear something which is made out of material which will keep sweat at bay or you’ll end up super cold when you sweat, if you sweat. Something like a synthetic material specifically designed for active use or a Merino wool alternative.
On top of your base layer, put on a middle layer, also known as the insulation layer to trap warmth close to your body. Fleece is a popular favourite because it is a light alternative to the heavier down jacket or a synthetically insulated jacket. Some fleece jackets have built-in windproof membranes that offers better protection whilst still allowing the fleece jacket to breathe – highly recommended for skiers and cyclists in this type of weather! Make sure it has a zip so you can cool off when it gets a bit too hot.
And last but not least, throw on the last layer of an outer shell which must provide you with the best layer of protection but still having great breathability, because you do not want high winds or worse, rain, to penetrate your outer shell and wet your inside layers! Cold wind against your skin is not nice, I can assure you. Also make sure it’s big and roomy enough to fit your several layers underneath.
There. If you follow my advice whilst in Europe, you’d be able to go about your business as usual without feeling like a stiff carrot. Layering your clothes right is the key to keeping warm this winter outdoors.
