How to get out of the red

A blog commenter has interestingly asked me for my secret of getting out of the red so kindly allow me to share.

When I impulsively quit my job many yonks ago, we lost a huge chunk of income coming into our household and very quickly, I was digging into my savings and before I knew it, there were no more savings. Zero. Zilch. I could have closed my bank account. I think I probably did close a few!

At that time, we had 2 properties to finance, 2 cars and other bills, like insurances etc. It was a heavy burden on the Hubs. There were days of frugality, days of desperation, days of counting piggy bank coins, days of depression……..oh, there were so many stressful days!

The Hubs, bless him, would spend hours every weekend trying to shift credit card balances around to get the zero interest offers and I think we were shifting credit cards around for at least a year or two! That’s how broke we were. We only bought necessities from the supermarket and didn’t go out nor eat out and we buried our credit cards in the home grave. There was no shopping. That was the toughest part on me because from a high flying career at the twin towers where I could shift myself vertically downwards to shopping paradise, where I must have spent a few thousand dollars every month, I was now barred from spending anything. ANYTHING.

It was like quitting smoking. I had severe withdrawal symptoms. No, I’m only kidding!

We prayed. Oh, how hard we prayed.

And then my Mom got cancer, and then Tee was born because my Mom had cancer, and then we knew we had to do something about the whole situation as we now had a life to care for.

So I grew up.

I started working freelance doing anything that would earn me a bit of spare cash. I sold stuff. I had some writing contracts. I did odd jobs for people (all clean, mind you) and I started a blog! I must say that out of all the jobs I did since quitting work, the blog has been the biggest earner, so thank you, my dear readers. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

In the meantime, I had sold my car and subsequently, we managed to sell our other property (a big PHEW!!! as it was a very heavy burden on us) and thankfully, the Hubs had worked so smart that he is getting big increments and bonuses every single year. By not stepping into any of the coffee joints for a few years, and saving up on the Hubs increments every year, we were finally one day out of the red.

We are also lucky enough that we know people who pay for our holidays. They want our company and invite us, so we go! Other than that, our US holiday was settled with blog money and a lot of Tee’s expenses are paid for by her grandparents because they spoil adore her so much. I don’t buy ANY of her clothes and she has the most amazing clothes…….she is one lucky girl, and we are extremely blessed that she has been well taken care of.

So now that we’re in the black again, we can afford to buy back more assets, stocks, unit trusts, blablabla and with a lot of seduction, I get to have some shopping thrown in *wink*

Honestly, I owe it all to the Hubs as I am just useless with money. It was HIM that brought us out of the red, and it will probably be HIM that takes us to millionairedom!

But then again, who knows? I have plans up my sleeves……..

Oh, and one more thing. Even though we were in the red, I never stopped doing charity. I always believe in doing good, so if you earn a hundred bucks, you give away ten dollars or one dollar (whichever suits you), but if you earn a hundred thousand bucks, then you give away ten thousand dollars. I believe in karma. What goes around, comes around and thankfully for us, it has.

  3. i, too, quit my job to have a baby, now incomeless, epf-less, and income tax-less. with economic conditions like now, it’s really stressful, no more coffee joints, resort to kopitiam (coffee shops, not even old town coffee). your story is truly inspirational, I shall keep in mind, sunny days will b here soon. 🙂
