When I picked Tee from school last Friday, she excitedly told me that I wasn’t allowed to look into her school bag. Knowing exactly why, I played along anyway and pretended to be really curious. She was so excited and could simply not contain herself that she had to tell me that she had a secret but couldn’t tell me what it was. Then she had to add that when we got home, I had to close my eyes and she was going to hide something so that I would find it on Sunday. What a dead give-away….
I took the opportunity to teach her that when you wanted to surprise someone, you were meant to keep absolutely quiet about it so that when the person actually found the object, they would be genuinely surprised! She immediately took offense (my girl cannot lose) and scolded me back, “Mom!! I’m not telling you what it is! I’m only telling you there is a surprise!” followed by a big sigh of frustration.
I sniggered quietly to myself. OK, whatever.
Then as soon as I placed myself on the couch to nurse T2 when we arrived home, Tee yelled, “OK, MOM!! Close your eyes now!! Because I’m going to put something near you and you mustn’t find it!”
Too funny.
“I thought it was meant for Sunday?? Did Mrs R tell you to hide it from me?” I queried.
“No, I want it to be a surprise so that’s why I’m hiding it!,” she explained, again frustrated yet excited. She just couldn’t wait and had to show me what she had so I continued to play along while she shuffled near me and shoved something under my butt. I mean, of all places to hide a Mother’s Day gift?
Once she left my side, I waited awhile before discovering the gift under my butt and put on my Academy Award Winning Performance of shock, surprise, fascination and awe whilst I marveled at her creation. It was a heart shaped Mother’s Day card with a 3D flower within and a little Hershey Kiss as the middle of the flower. Very sweet.
It wasn’t the beauty of the card that caught me. It was the pure innocence of a child and her intense enthusiasm at wanting to show her Mom how much she loved her and the desire to see her Mom elated at her gesture that melted my heart with volcanic fury. Tee and I…..the love we have for each other is immeasurable beyond the distance of light. I truly love this girl to bits.
