Greatest scare of my life!

Tuesday 8pm -Tee choked on a fish bone whilst eating rice with tofu and silver pomfret.

Note to moms: as much and as carefully you think you’ve removed the bones from your toddler’s dish, check, check and check again!!! With your fingers and toes, mouth, nose, ears, elbows…….

We were happily having dinner when Tee complained about something stuck in her throat. She was still breathing so that was a good sign and could talk, just VERY irritatedly. Coughing frantically trying to get the knife fish bone out of her throat with intermittent swallowing of rice balls seemed to do the trick. After awhile, she calmed down so I thought, good-she’s okay.

Three minutes later, she let out a scream again and complained that the bone had resurfaced. Shit. More rice balls but now she no longer wanted them. Not knowing what to do and seeing that she was clearly in distress, I called our GP and told her our dilemma. She said to take Tee to the hospital straight away. That didn’t help my nerves. I was actually hoping to finish MY dinner.

So we jumped into the car and flew as fast as we could to Pantai. For some reason, when you’re in a rush, Murphy’s Law smashes your face and you hit every single red light on your way AND every single bump on Jalan Medang Tandok (which made Tee grunt in disapproval) and the supposed emergency rush to hospital takes five hundred hours. Not a good sign when you have an emergency. Anyone else would have been dead.

As we were turning into the hospital, I suddenly realised that the car had been silent for awhile. Well, it might only have been seconds but to me felt like an hour. I called out to my little pumpkin but she was silent. I turned around and she was slumped over. I made the fastest spin into the hospital braving oncoming cars and dropped the car right in front of an outgoing ambulance because there was NOWHERE ELSE TO PARK.

I then unbuckled the car seat, all this time screaming out to Tee to wake up. WAKE UP!!! WAKE UP, GIRL!!! And flung my car keys to the stranger security guard who’d just waddled up to tell me I couldn’t park my car in front of an ambulance that was about to leave.

We rushed into the Accident & Emergency lobby with me yelling out her name for registration. The hospital was very fast. Thank you, God. Within seconds, Tee had been revived naturally. There was one young male Doctor and seven nurses surrounding her when she came to and one very freaked out mother. But I wanted to kiss every single one of them personally and then lick the hospital floor. I was so grateful to the team that my daughter was OK. You have no idea.

They had made her puke by putting something down her throat. We don’t know if the bone came out or fell in but Tee managed to whimper that she was fine.

No more bone.” she said. When we walked out of the hospital, I was hugging her so tight I almost squeezed the life out of her. How ironic.

The Doctor had checked her throat and confirmed that it was extremely inflamed with swollen tonsils and instructed that if she were to complain of pain again, to return to see the ENT. Thankfully, we didn’t need to and Tee’s only request that night was that she didn’t have to go to school the next day. My little munchkin has learnt the word ‘ponteng’ (skive/play hooky). At THREE YEARS OLD.

If her attendance record at school is more than 50% by the time she hits 16, I’ll refrain from jumping up and down due to a sense of elatement.
