Getting caught for stealing

SO the day before we left for Perth, we had to do a bit of last minute shopping, the story of my life, everything happens last minute. The Hubs, my 2 girls and I trotted off leisurely to The Gardens/Mid Valley to get the haul that my Ozzie cuzzies wanted but for some reason, I kept setting off alarm bells at every departmental store we entered!!!

They’d walk in without any problems and I’d always set off the alarms. Going in with alarms is one thing but stepping out with alarms is not so fun. Especially not when a plain clothes police man comes after you to ask to search your bag.

At store 1 – I walked in and out without problems. It was early on in the day so perhaps security wasn’t awake yet. And just so you know, it was the double J store.

At store 2 – I walked in and out without problems either. Perhaps it was because they saw me go in innocently and walk out innocently very soon after, and since I have such an innocent face, ahem, I had no problems. This was an IT peripheral store.

At store 3 – I walked in without anyone noticing but got caught when I walked out. The detective searched my bag, then asked if I had any make up that was new because apparently make up was a common thing that got the alarms going. Women sometimes forget to remove the bar code stickers from their new make up. He checked my make up bag, all was okay. We were all perturbed. Why was I setting off the alarms? So the Hubs suggested I walk in and out WITHOUT my bag and lo and behold, I STILL set off the alarms. Which was even more worrying because now, the detective would think I’d stolen some underwear! I quickly told the Hubs that it couldn’t be my underwear because they were all old and have been through many, many store alarms without problems. In the end, short from stripping me, the detective allowed us to walk away scott free. But T1 and the Hubs and myself were still really, really curious why Mommy was setting off alarms!

So we decided to try another store……

At store 3 – I was still setting those blinking alarms off!!! The security guard that was guarding the store smiled and asked if I had some make up. I showed him how I could walk in without my bag and still set off the alarms. He continued to smile and suggested that there must be some tag on my clothing some where that still had a bar code on. Oh, whatever!!!

Curiousity got the better of me and I walked out, sat on a bench and started to think really hard. Then I started digging out every single tag that was within everything that I was wearing and VOILA!!! I found this:

It was sewed onto the Ann Taylor T-Shirt that I’d never worn and thankfully, we had a baby nail clipper that I quickly whipped out and snip-snip-snip. No more beep-beep-beep-beep!!!

  1. Oh dear, I’d be capable of things like that do. Actually I once let my son wear a new pair of pants without cutting the tag

  2. so…u were wearing that shirt? gosh.. thanks for letting know.. sometimes i saw the guards checking some ladies’ handbags, i never thought of the tags we had on our bodies..
btw, did u catch some eyes watching you when guard searched your bag? 🙂

  3. Hi MamaPumpkin,
Sorry it’s been a long while, but I LOVE your new look! 🙂

You’re lucky it’s a small tag that can be snipped off with a nail clipper. But there was once when my hubby got a shirt from M%S One Utama, and we drove all the way home in peak hour traffic and found out the security tag was still ON!! And we didn’t even set off the alarm. AND what’s more, we were due to fly back to Melbourne that very evening!

Sigh… didn’t end up bringing the shirt back.

Gonna take me a while tonight to read through your blog!

  4. LOL!! It happened to my hubby before. He had that darn tag sewed on his denim. It was pretty embarrassing for him because the securities had to search him a few time. We only found out about the tag when we reached home.

  5. I didn’t know those tags could set off the detectors. At least I do now! Funny thing happened yesterday – we walked out of Toys R Us and didn’t realised that B3 was holding onto an un-paid toy, which we didn’t intend on buying. We just gave it to him to keep him occupied while we walked around the shop. Did you notice that there aren’t any detectors in Tors R Us? I wonder why. Anyway, we returned the toy 20mins later when we found out.
