Frustrations of a Stay at Home Mom

I know the grass is always greener but today, I had one of those days. Yes, THOSE days. You know, those days when you just want to scream out loud in an open stadium? Those days when you just want to smash everything breakable in sight? Those days when you just feel like eating the entire chocolate factory in Belgium? I had one of those.

I brought Tee and T2 to swim at our apartment’s pool, as promised (although after sleeping at 5am, I sure as hell didn’t feel like it) but this alone proved to be stressful. The reason I couldn’t bring our helper along is because she is so slow (by my standards, may I qualify) that she had to cook our lunch. We left at 11am to be back by noon or just after for lunch. When we got to the pool, I realised we’d forgotten to put some mosquito repellant on T2. I live beside a jungle. It didn’t take a blind man to see that the mozzies just swarmed around her new fresh blood. T2 has never been to our poolside. Never.

A hundred staircase steps later, we were back in the pool again. With mozzie repellant. It was hot. It was so hot, I was swimming in sweat. I was wetter than Tee! And she was the one who was swimming! T2 was in the Baby Bjorn (ERGO was in the car) looking out at her big sister get wet. Then Tee says she wants to go to the baby pool. So we packed our stuff and walked to the baby pool. Then she said she wanted to go back to the big pool. Off we went again. I needed to be close to her and needed to see her although on hindsight, what would I have done really, if she was drowning? Throw T2 into the pool to rescue her sister? Or dive in together with T2 and hope she remembers what it’s like inside the womb?

After 45 minutes, T2 started fussing so I tried feeding her, exposing my breast to more than a dozen apartment dwellers who looked down upon the pool. Great. She wouldn’t stop fussing, so after trying to placate her several times, I told Tee we had to go. She wasn’t happy, of course.

Came home and lunch wasn’t ready. Tee was starving as kids are after a swim. How much more of an hour does one need to cook fried rice? I even ordered her to start cooking immediately the moment we were going to leave. She had a whole hour. I can do fried rice in an hour. Can you? Let’s see, there were carrots, meat, onions, garlic, cabbage. Cutting them would have taken me half an hour. I just don’t get it.

What made me more mad was that T2 refused to sleep all day. From 10am till now, 6pm, she has been awake. Which means I can hardly do much. I’ve told my helper that she needed to regularly feed Tee a drink every hour. Or every other hour. Does it happen? NO! I have to keep coming out of my bedroom (as I’m trying to put T2 to sleep all day!) to check on Tee and every single time, she has not got a glass of water in front of her. If she doesn’t have water in front of her, how is she supposed to drink!?! AAARRRGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!

And then I have Tee who cannot stop talking all day and has the loudest voice on this planet! Thus every chance T2 has of remotely sleeping is washed down the toilet. What more, Tee HAS to come into the bedroom every now and then to check on our status. No matter how hard she tries to do the ballerina tippy-toe, it always comes out sounding like a rhino stomp. Such is my girl’s footsteps.

Then T2 wakes at 630pm and needs the breast again till 710pm. I am just going crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Awwww…. Pat pat shoulder. Poor thang u. After blogging it out, u feel better like 1 percent better? Better than nothing larr! Tomorrow I come by see u again, make sure u ok..

  2. understand how u feel…….it’s difficult being a SAHM…..for me, it’s especially harder when hubby is away on business trip

  3. You’ve just had a bad day, it’s ok to “shout” it out! Yeap, SAHM is not an easy job.
BTW, can Tee drink from a tumbler at home? I just fill one up for each kid, and they will help themselves to it. If I din do so, they will just pour by themselves at the table. Maybe no kakak la, so they got gao tim themselves. :p

  4. I understand how you feel. In fact, I salute you that you can manage 2 kids by yourself, knowing your helper is of not much help.

I just send my girl to my parents! Sigh….what a bad mommy I am…

If you were to ask me, I’d say being a SAHM is much more difficult than being a health care professional!

  5. chak! am here to check on you.. ;). *sing* I got a feeling.. it’s gonna be a gud gud day..woohoo~

  6. Oh dear some days are just like that. Hugs to you. By the way I honestly believe my son has a louder voice than your daughter. He has no inside voice and he walks with heavy feet too.

  7. It’s just one of those days huh? I don’t stay home and yet I still those days on weekends when all the kids act up and nothing seems to be going right. Well, I console myself that tomorrow is a new day and all will be better soon 🙂

  8. I feel for you coz my baby refused to sleep as well . Babies should be sleeping most of the time right? Like you, I have one son who constantly come to check on his sister whenever I am nursing her too:D Haha. Hang in there my friend 🙂

  9. don’t worry. i encounter even worst daily. Trying to put one to sleep after another. But by the time he is sleepy, the other one is fully charged again and screaming wanting to wake up….ARRGHHHH!!!!

  10. Sorry. No advice re the kids. Mine are big monsters…and even so, sometimes I get so frustrated that I just scream, and then hide in my bedroom!

But as for the maid, I have a few tips that might improve efficiency abit. I find that chopping garlic and slicing shallots is rather time consuming. So I get my maid to chop the garlic and slice shallots in her free time… So there’s always these necessities in the fridge. The other stuff like meat and veges, are relatively easier to cut and prepare…
