First female architect in Malaysia

In wondering what I would be doing as an escape from the banal and very difficult job as a stay-at-home-mom, I have been pondering as to what I would be doing as next steps.

Every night, I would think about my skill sets, what I am qualified to do and more importantly, what I love doing. I started at the beginning, being trained as an architect, I could always revert to architecture. My first job in Malaysia was with a locally renown architect who built the Securities Commission Headquarters along Bukit Kiara, the Tabung Haji building on Jalan Tun Razak, Menara Telekom on Pantai and the Lot 10 Shopping Mall on Bukit Bintang, to name a few achievements. As my first job, I learnt tremendously and had lots of fun with my colleagues.

At that time, there weren’t many female architects in Malaysia and I was actually discouraged by an elderly female architect to quit architecture whilst I was young and could. I wondered then who the first ever female architect in Malaysia was and wished I could have spoken to her for some insight but finding her was difficult. I still wonder who she is and how she felt about architecture and being a female architect in Malaysia. It was easy to find out who the first female architect ever was – a French lady in the year 1901 called Julia Morgan.

Eventually, I did quit architecture for reasons of corruption in Malaysia but it didn’t mean I couldn’t pick it up again. Do I want to do it again? Not right now. With 2 kids, architecture would be impractical as it takes up a lot of time. Detailed drawings take hours…..thoughts on detailing buildings take hours……researching materials take hours……forget it. I don’t have that kind of time.

I need something which my kids can be incorporated into. What could that be?
