Feelings of Inadequacy with some Datins

No, not me. I hardly ever feel inadequate, muahahaha…..

Whilst I was savouring some cupcakes whilst my daughter was enjoying her art class, a Datin came to sit for a chat and very soon, another Datin joined us as she had a few minutes to spare whilst passing by. Let’s call them Datin 1 and Datin 2 for the sake of this exercise 😉

Datin 1 tells us the story of how her kids are now in AS International School and really enjoying it but oh, how she cannot stand those AS moms! Datin 2, who has a younger set of kids, asks, “But don’t you HAVE to be very involved with the kids’ at AS?” Datin 1 explains that you can be as involved or as uninvolved as you want to be and no, she certainly does not want to hang out with those moms. She started to tell us about this AS children’s party that she attended where all the Moms had started drinking alcohol INSIDE the house where there was a bar very early on and all the kids were OUTSIDE the house swimming. Nobody was watching the kids who were 6 years old but still…..

So Datin 1 was very stressed being 1 of 2 adults keeping vigilant on the kids at water and feeling disgusted that these Moms were showing such a bad example to children. Junk food, alcohol, just dumping the kids at the pool regardless, at a child’s birthday party. Hmmph….she couldn’t wait to get out of there as soon as the cake was cut, just out of courtesy.

Datin 2 and me, listened intently……it did sound quite irresponsible, the way she had told the story, but then again, the idea did cross my mind to serve cans of Green Carlsberg Beer to Tee’s friend’s Dads for her Green Birthday Party since it will be a hot afternoon swimming party……and since we were doing everything GREEN, GREEN, GREEN!!!

On the other hand, Datin 2 looked totally appalled……

15 minutes later, Datin 2 leaves and Datin 1 gets back to work and I pay and leave to pick Tee up but on the way, I drop by to say hello to Datin 3 whom I am closer to (although not exactly close but at least we had our kids in the same class before), who is in the process of getting her hair washed at the nearby hair salon. I laughed and told her how I just met those 2 Datins and the conversation about the AS party and that is just one good reason why Tee should not go to International School at this age. Mind you, I heard from another Mom at British School that her 5 year old daughter is already talking about French Kissing….

Datin 3 looked at me and told me very matter of factly, that she had just attended Datin 2’s child’s 3 year old birthday party and there was free flow of champagne and wine.

I couldn’t help but BURST OUT LAUGHING!!!!

Then Datin 3 asked, “You mean Datin 2 didn’t say, ‘So? What’s wrong with serving alcohol at birthday parties? I had free flow of champagne and wine at my 3 year old’s party!!!”

So what do you think? Should one serve alcohol at a children’s party? Would you have spoken out if you had been Datin 2? Do share your thoughts, I am so intrigued…..

  1. So you are Datin no. 4?

I have no Datin friends. I think if the kids are not involved in anything that needs close supervision (like swimming), it’s good to have some beer especially for the dads.

  2. Maybe not ‘good’.. but ‘ok’. 😛

When I attend close friends’ kids’ birthday party, normally we’ll be sipping Baileys or some wine while the kids play in the play room.

  3. I guess it’s alright. I had attended a 2 yrs old birthday party here, and there lot champagne and wine. Being in France, you can’t escape seeing those at parties, but moderation is the key. Enjoy the taste but not booze till no tomorrow. Parents should know their limit and not exceeding the amount their body can take.

  4. I would and don’t find anything wrong as long as adults drink responsibily, meaning the kids aren’t being neglected. Typically, we have a few parents who don’t drink, or who take turns to watch over the kiddos.

  5. We served alchohol for the adults at my daughter’s 5th year party. Had no complaints….it was a blast.

  6. we have friends who don’t drink and friends who do. it kinda evens it out as long as each parent keep an eye on their own kids. to leave children in the pool without adult supervision is totally irresponsible tho’.

  7. heheheh so u r in the Datin circle too huh… got any oil tycoon for me or not?

I think in school (a place known for education) n kids parties and such…No alcohol…who’s party is it anyway ..for kids right..and not the adults.

  8. Errr…we normally serve beers, wines, champagnes and what-nots to the parents who decide to stay on at my kids’ birthday parties. It’s not that they are going to drink until the cows come home. We sit in the terrace SUPERVISING the kids in the pool….otherwise, sure will have fights and whatever calamity!!!!
