Tee’s school is full of competition and whilst competition is healthy, I have to try very hard to stay away from competing Moms. Yes, it is the Moms who are competing, not the kids. The kids are just innocent and happy to do whatever school makes them do but it is the Moms who pressure them. Thus at this exam round, I didn’t ask Tee to study at all except for reminding her to practise her Bahasa, and I did that subtly. Her results turned out even better than last terms and guess what the cheeky monkey said? “Mom, since I did better in my exams when I didn’t study, maybe it’s a good idea to stop studying!!”
Honestly, the kid is not even 10. I only ever remember studying when I was 10. And even then, because my friend introduced the concept of studying to me.
Let’s just wait till she’s a teenager before we start applying any kind of pressure (and even then, I’m not sure if I want to apply any pressure at all as I believe children should be nurtured to WANT to learn and not be FORCED to learn) when she needs to do her sat prep well. In that, our challenge is not to pressure them to study but to teach them to love what they are studying and want to learn more. Hey, nobody said raising kids was easy!! However, there is lots of help out there available if you’re stuck!
