Does my child need a religion?

Tee is coming to an age where she is ready to start a religion. That is if I start her on one. With the state of the world today, I really am not sure what to do. Even if I did decide on a religion, I’d then have to consider the various denominations within each religion! And that alone puts me off.

I was born a Christian (Roman Catholic) by default. My mother is a Muslim convert and prays five times a day! The Hubs is a non-practising Buddhist and knows absolutely nothing about Buddhism. Beer maybe, but not Buddha. My life has had Buddhist and Christian influences in the past and I have friends of all religions. So where does that leave us?

I believe that there is ONE GOD. I really do. I believe that all the different religions and different denominations of religions are only man’s interpretations of early scriptures and theories of religion then. And then due to disagreements, deviated from the original and formed new sects. I think it is all bullshit. We should all respect one another as individuals regardless of race and religion. As long as our children are taught good moral values, does it matter if they have a religion or not?

Yes, it does. Having a religion, I think, gives one a foundation of spirituality. Regardless of whether a child chooses to follow a religion or not later, at least an introduction to God and the concept of spirituality is embedded into his or her brain but more importantly, their heart. We all know that most religions teach us good things and although sometimes, a particular religion doesn’t quite make sense, it is up to us to impart our own common sense into what we want to extract from that particular religion.

As for Tee, I will probably send her down the Christianity route just because I was born a Christian. However, which denomination of Christianity, I have no idea. Form my own? Haha…

It would probably be a matter of location!! Or if there was a cute priest!!!

Care to share your child’s religious story……..??

  1. cute priest????? are there any?? tell me! tell me!…haha, u r forever soooo funny, woman!!

  2. Religion is a good thing. Mom may not see everything but GOD sees EVERYTHING. That itself is a great parenting help. Hahahahah. Seriously though, I can see how the gospel is a great strength to my kids. Learning eternal truths will help them face this troubled world.
Here’s a thought for you, what if there was a true church, one revealed by God himself? Not based on man’s interpretation, but based on revelation? Would you be interested in finding a church that holds eternal truths?

  3. I agree there’s one god as well. I like the idea of saying, “Mom may not see everything but GOD sees EVERYTHING.” =) I haven’t really thought of introducing religion to my little girl yet since I want her to recognize her ABCs first. I am pretty certain I will teach her about different religions though. My husband’s and my teachings are quite different and that hasn’t confused her yet. I think teaching her a few religions should be okay…

  4. Boy oh boy..this is a hot topic (that is, I’m constantly arguing with myself) for me. Day in day out..I will think..what denomination, which church… what where who when why…

I too was brought up a Christian (Anglican)..but Mum decided Buddhism worked for her..and Dad..well, he kinda figured, praying at home was better than praying at church. WAKAKAKAAKAKAKAKAKA!

Gosh..I love your posts..gonna subscribe to it!
