The next day in Kota Bharu was declared Nasi Dagang Day for us so we woke bright and early to catch the nasi dagang lady who makes THE best nasi dagang in Kelantan. If you’re late, you’d have to settle with plain rice and gravy. Not cool.
Cooking nasi dagang is one of my missions in life. It sounds simple enough. Aim low and you shan’t be disappointed. If you googled, you’d find various nasi dagang recipes. My MIL knows how to cook this so I’ll check out her recipe too. It seems fenugreek is a common ingredient. No wonder the Malay women have so much breast milk! Tiap-tiap hari makan nasi dagang kut! (Probably from eating nasi dagang every day!)
Awesome-ness in a packet. The nasi dagang lady complained that we weren’t ordering in bulk from her this year as my MIL usually orders a bulk order every Chinese New Year to feed guests who arrive at the house during Chinese New Year. But this year, MIL said she’ll do her famous Mee Siam for the guests for a change. Lucky guests. That’s all I can say.
We bought our nasi dagang and brought it along to Pengkalan Kubur (at the Thai Border) where we go every single time to have breakfast. Needless to say, it was an incredible breakfast and I reminded myself again, my life mission – cooking nasi dagang.
We also had some pulut bakar with sambal prawns inside.
.
And thick black kopi-O.
.
T1 was really fascinated that Kong-Kong sipped his coffee from the saucer and she kept staring at him. The next day, she asked again why he did that because she found it so strange. There is a cup for a reason, right? Did it taste better from the saucer? And just to take the mickey out of her, every time Kong-Kong drank his coffee at home, he’d purposely pour his coffee onto the saucer and drink from it and T1 would STARE again thinking DISGUSTING MAN. No, I’m just making that up. I told her that sometimes the coffee shop people spill the drink and so not to waste it, people drink from the saucer. Am I right?
After breakfast, we took a walk and T1 led Ama straight to the chocolate shop and started picking her loot. When T2 saw, she immediately yelled for some too. So they both brought home a bag of Hersheys and what not.
.
On the way back to the car, Ama noticed what a good job the drain man was cleaning and decided to give him RM50 cash. I thought that was plenty sweet. How come nobody ever gives me random cash whilst I’m on the street? Oh, perhaps I need to be cleaning the drain first. Duh.
.
And then Kong-Kong brought the girls for their Kelantanese Animal Adventure! T2 got so excited seeing live cows!!! She kept going, “MOoooooooo……MOoooooooo………” Super cute. We identified that she knows all her animal sounds.
Apart from passing by acres and acres of padi fields, we also saw birds, chickens and cockerels, goats, buffaloes, fishes, ducks and those big white birds in the distance. A true kampung educational experience.
The highlight was getting up close with Mona the Monkey, the coconut specialist. The girls were SO excited, baby included. She usually runs to our window at home to catch the monkeys outside on the trees but they are so far not within reach but now, a real live monkey right in front of her!!! We didn’t allow them to touch it, of course.
.
And then, Kong-Kong had a surprise for the girls. He made us walk deep into the jungle to catch it.
Check back later to find out what the surprise was…….*hick*
How has your Gong Xi Fa Cai been so far???
Hmmm…..this post started with cooking nasi dagang, and then I waffled on about our nasi dagang day…….sorry!

Coffee is poured into the saucer to cool it down so that when the person drinks it from the saucer, the coffee is not scorching hot and burn the mouth.
