Choosing who to invite for a kid’s party

T1 is a popular girl. More often than not, she gets invited to many parties. However, I’ve noted more than once that not everyone else is. In fact, one student hardly ever gets invited to any parties! Which brings me to this – should we invite everyone or just the few that a child likes, and whom he considers friends?

In some International Schools in town, it is compulsory that whenever a student has a birthday party, to invite the entire class. That’s a whole 30 kids running around in your home!! Assuming you hold it at home. I’d rather just scrap the party! If it was at Kizsport or something, fine, but expensive. Well and good if you can afford to pay more than RM3000 for a kiddy party, but otherwise, it is what some people use to feed their families in a month. Or two. Or three.

Yet, I keep thinking of those poor kids who don’t get invited. Their rejected and dejected little hearts at such a tender, sensitive age……Sure, they will have to learn this eventually, but is it really necessary now? Some kids are fine with not being invited to a party, but some aren’t. And to preserve the happiness of those who are more sensitive, I’m inclined to invite everyone. Everybody deserves a chance to be invited. They may not come, but it is polite to just invite them any way. Now, to convince my girl that we should learn to be a gracious host!

  1. I totally agree on the idea of inclusion. However, I won’t throw parties beyond family members because it is expensive to do so.

  2. We just hosted a party for my son’s bday. Like T1, my boy is pretty popular in class. We ended up with 40 kids at the party. *faint*.
