Having traveled a good part of the world and dealt with as many foreign services and products and as many local, I am disheartened to announce that I generally still prefer the services and products of Britain and the USA…..and probably many of what the other first world countries have to offer. Don’t take me wrongly, I do acknowledge that we have some amazing world class talent here, but unfortunately due to whatever it is, many of these talents have been squashed. They are either out of the country or not allowed to reach their full potential locally.

Look around you. Walk into a restaurant in KL and walk into a restaurant in New York. I realise it may be ridiculous to compare but whilst we’re comparing, just bare with me. Walk into a bank in KL and walk into a bank in London. There is a marked difference in efficiency.

Take for example, me choosing between a local web hosting company and a foreign one. The reason I have chosen to go with a foreign web hosting company is because the Hubs has absolutely no faith in most things local, our education system included. Have you heard the latest news on our Government’s hiccup on Government school’s English books? *big sigh* So many things that happen here in this country are so bloody unnecessary. WHY!!!???!!! I truly love my country, but why???!!!

For the last 4 years, my American web hosting company has been perfect. They are there round the clock on live chat to help me with ANY problem I might have with my site and have always, ALWAYS helped me within minutes. I always rate them a 10 out of 10 and am always reassured that my problems are resolved. AND *rolls eyeballs fifty times over* they happen to be cheaper and of better value (like a million times, seriously) than our local counterparts. Locally, for a higher fee, I am limited to 10 Gigs of disk space whereas the cheaper foreign web host offers UNLIMITED disk space and much better service. Just to name one advantage. ONE! There is so much more….

Recently, I’ve had to register a dot com dot my and unfortunately, this, the Americans cannot do for me. I contacted a local company and made some queries. I needed this done urgently but guess what? They could not answer my questions. If they were proactive, they would have just called me to sort it out but they kept emailing me rubbish and wasting my time. How? I think the Government has kept us dumb for too long! *cries out loud*

They told me, we have a data centre here and a data centre in the USA. I ask, what is the difference? They answer, one is here located in XXX and the other is located in the US at XXX. I ask again, which should I choose then? They said, if your readers are American, then you put it in the US; if your readers are Malaysian, then you put it in Malaysia.I close my eyes and count to ten.

I still ask, what is the difference??? My readers are spread out equally. I have as many Malaysian readers as I have Americans, so what do I do then? And then I decided to help them. I said, if I had a choice, I’d want more Malaysian readers, for the purpose of this exercise. So Malaysian data centre it is. Later I asked the Hubs what the reason could be? Because THEY couldn’t tell me. He said, perhaps so my readers get faster access? Why couldn’t they have told me that?

I also asked, why are you so expensive when I’m paying a foreign service less and getting more? Their answer, we are sorry that there are more competitive providers than us. We will strive to maintain our number 1 hosting provider standing in Malaysia. All emails are in bad English. OK, I’m not so particular about the bad English but more that I just want this over and done with but they’re not answering my questions! I need to know which package I should get because there were so many to choose from and nobody could help me! So screw it.

I have just about lost my patience and have started looking at other local companies and have even contacted my American guys to say, hey, I know I can’t register a dot com dot my with you guys but once I do, are you able to host it for me, pretty please? They said they would be happy to do it but the domain name server would have to be changed. I have no idea what that means or if I even have control of that. I’m not sure what our Malaysian laws are here but I sure hope I can get my dot com dot my hosted abroad. Because the local services would drive me into fits of epilepsy.

Sometimes I think, it is so easy to succeed here purely because the standards are so low. I know I’m generalising, but out of a hundred companies, you get 1 that stands out. You know?
