Cheeky Penguin and toddlers refusing blankets

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

What is it with toddlers and their fierce repulsion of blankets? Ever since the day Tee was born, she has been grossly allergic to blankets; breaking out in a hot rash (from screaming protests) as a baby if we wrapped her up and now telling me that she would melt if she were to wear a blanket.

As a baby, we couldn’t even wrap her on Day One as she wiggled and struggled out of her baby wrap. So we allowed her hands to come out and this kept her happy for a few more days. Then she screamed Bablish (that’s baby language for those of you not in the know) that she wanted the baby wrap off too, so off it came. Soon after, we bought her the zipper blankets thinking it would keep her snug and safe but she wouldn’t have any of it. You know, the ones which look like a sleeveless shirt at the top but totally wraps you up beneath without air pockets to vent your body?

FABRIC PRISON!!!

And we had an escaped convict. Every single night.

A year ago, Tee decided that she didn’t even want her pyjama pants! Yes, my dear friends. My three year old daughter has been sleeping with a top and diaper ONLY for the last year. And then without a blanket. AT ALL. I could never do it. Never. Wearing a blanket always makes me feel that the bad air can’t touch me and the mozzies have lesser surface area to attack.

Because we live beside a jungle, it gets pretty cold in the evenings, but my little eskimo just refuses to wear a blanket nor even warmer clothes! She claims she is just too hot and would melt! Talk about drama……*swipes forehead dramatically*

Today, the planets are out of alignment and I am feeling rough. And for all the arguments that I have gone through with Tee today, I wanted to win ONE. Just one. So I could feel like I was in charge again.

I enforced the blanket rule as it was raining ice cubes and snow. I said under no circumstance was she to kick her blanket off. I even brought out a thinner one for her from her whinge that blankets made her puke.

Back and forth. Back and forth. Back and forth. She kicks it off. I put it back on. She kicks it off. I put it back on. She kicks it off. I put it back on. Each time, my voice is escalating and my tone gets fiercer.

Finally infuriated, Tee jumps out of bed, holds my face, stares deep into my eyes and says, “Mommy!!! Don’t you know I am a PENGUIN???!!!”

Totally gobsmacked, I burst into hysterics.
