For the longest time since Tee started school right up to this year, she had maintained that she only had one friend, her best friend and nobody else ever came close. Since the middle of last year, that best friend had moved on to International School although she still sees him on the weekends or at parties/play dates. She would play with other friends, new friends…….but she would never acknowledge them as friends. I was so worried that I went as far as to consult the child psychologist who recommended some exercises to do with her about friendship.

I had to draw a circle and ask her to write her best friend’s name in it. Then draw a bigger circle around it and ask her to write her 2nd tier best friends, then another circle around it and more friends who are less close to her and so on. This is an interesting exercise that even adults can do. And finally, you write the names of those you do not like OUTSIDE the largest circle.

So after 3 whole years, I am happy to announce that at this new school, Tee has come home happily telling me that now she has a lot of friends. More than eleven!! Then she named them one by one.You cannot imagine the joy in my heart when my obstinate girl comes home with this piece of news!

And out of all these eleven friends, both boys and girls, she has named this little boy down here as her best friend in school. They get along like wild fire, the blue flame and the orange flame, happily dancing together…….

And just like her ‘other’ best friend, I hope they remain best friends forever…..
