Sometimes, I am too busy to the point where I cannot even think of what to cook for dinner and even having a helper doesn’t help because I cannot switch off for even one second to tell her what to cook! In instances like this, I will call the Hubs up to say, come home early or else.
Then I will work right up to the point he is home and we rush out for a bite. I know, my poor kids…….
This is of course balanced out with many other days of nutritious home-cooked meals so I guess they don’t suffer too much!
Whilst strolling the streets of Bangsar, I spotted a cafe called the Antipodean Cafe and remembered reading about it somewhere. We decided to try it despite its very vague Australian hippy sounding name. What kind of food would they serve? Aborigine food? Who knows?
Only one way to find out.
We walked in to the dark-ish restaurant that was empty on a week day. The atmosphere might be called cosy and romantic to others. We were just hungry. We sat at a self chosen table and waited and waited and waited. Nobody came and I was starting to get irritated because doesn’t someone want to pass us the menu???
All the few staff they had were busy putting the outdoor tables away, cleaning walls and looked like they welcomed going home.
Then I realised, OH! The menu was on the wall!!!
Like DUHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! Pity I didn’t bring my binoculars because I had to squint my eyes to read the menu and even after that, could barely decide what to eat. The breakfast menu however…….I wanted to eat everything on there!
But we were there for dinner, so blaaaaaa…………….
We ended up ordering some Burmese noodles I think it was and although I kept asking the staff there if it was spicy, they kept saying no, it wasn’t spicy. Well, it turned out that those bloody Burmese noodles were cooked in curry powder so of course, my little chilli hater who was so looking forward to eating some noodles (yeah, she breaks out in fur whenever she eats the slightest of spice, even pepper!!!) could NOT eat it.
The noodles were also SUPER salty and it was disgusting. We actually forced ourselves to finish it because we were so hungry and because service was slow, didn’t want to make a fuss. Imagine waiting another 20 minutes for non-salty kuayteow? I’m sure the chef was accidentally heavy handed with the salt on that particular day. There was just no way that the Burmese taste buds are killer salty. So T1 ate the burger instead. Which was…………how shall I put it nicely? Like a regular club burger? Let’s just say you couldn’t compare it with an American Chillis burger or a TGIF burger or a Daily Grind burger.
We also ordered some chips which I thought was marvellous as they were pumpkin chips, not potato. My girls refused to eat them though. BWAHHHH!!!!!
They did look a bit miserable but they tasted OK. The Hubs and I became the DBKL again for food.
We ALSO ordered a chicken salad for our daily fives but it was SO disappointing. Look at this below. Would you consider this a beautiful salad? I was so disappointed :-(((
I look forward to eating vegetables because I know it is good for me and keeps me healthy but when I saw this, and then tasted it, it was just depressing……I was so depressed over the whole dinner.
Corrr…….even the juice was disappointing!!!
I’m sure the breakfast was very good but that night, we just had a very disappointing dinner at Antipodean Cafe. Everything we ordered was lousy.
However, we just HAD to order some dessert to make us feel happy and thankfully, that didn’t disappoint. We had a banana cake and I cannot remember now what else but they were both quite good, their desserts.
An amazingly large coffee roasting machine was sighted in one of the rooms behind so I can only imagine that their coffee must be darn good too! Perhaps we’ll come back another day for breakfast……
The plus point is that they had a small play area under the stairs that had a TV and some broken toys.
I actually removed some dangerously sharp broken toys (you know those cheap made in China toys when broken are very dangerous!) and brought them to the counter and informed them about the danger of those toys. Not sure if they got it or not.
But the girls had fun playing with the toys there…….
Strangely, Antipodean Cafe does have a following because as the night progressed, the cafe suddenly filled up with a few tables and they looked like regulars, knowing what they wanted to order. I wonder how long they’ve been opened and perhaps they’re just having teething problems with their menu. I would give them another chance with their breakfast menu and shall report back when we eventually do that.
