Achieving work life balance for Moms

Heck, is there such a thing?

I’m certainly not getting it at the moment!

Let’s see, I work an average of 18 hours per day and it’s driving me a bit nuts. I could do it back in the day when I was single and child-less but mannnnnnnnnnnnn…………..I have kids now. And I can do it no longer. So I got myself an assistant who’s been slowly taking over some of the tasks and I’m hoping that it’ll come to a point where I actually start working 8 hours days – something I do not remember EVER doing. I am the perfect employee. With every company I have joined, I have given them my all. Good and bad. Good because I rise up the ranks fast. Bad because I now have to choose between my kids and my work. Why did I have kids again? The Hubs would say, why did you even start work again?! Your kids were supposed to be your job!!!

Yeah, but a woman’s got to have what a woman’s got to have. Y’know…..that special something that she can call hers. So it’s fun raising kids and it is also a nightmare raising kids and there is every emotion in between. The joy you get is irreplaceable and well, I did that for 7 years with T1 and I was cornered into this job, so there.

I’ve tried quitting twice already (not for another job) but my Boss wouldn’t see any of it. He is so charming that he manages to talk me straight back into working for him again……and believe me, I do want to. I want to be a part of something special, something that I can be proud building, knowing that I did it.

And because I know I can no longer go on like this, I’ve come up with a new strategy. My new mantra:

  1. I will no longer work weekends, unless it’s absolutely life and death.
  2. I will put my phone away during the weekends short of checking occasionally for messages and shan’t respond till the kids are in bed. This week, I attended an amazing dance performance by the Rivergrass Dance Group and whilst waiting for the show to start, I was emailing and chatting to my Director in Bangkok strategising next moves. That’s how bad it is! I am so lacking in time that even when I’m in the toilet, I’m communicating with London to decide on what to do with ABCDE…..
  3. I will attempt to work a maximum of 8 hours per day. Yeah, right……
  4. I will delegate wherever I can. More often than not, I am ever the control freak always wanting things to be perfect but alas, there comes a point where you just have to let go and allow people to fly…..
  5. Despite the less work hours, I will bring the company to an entire new level. I will.

I have also started to go to the park to exercise and although the last week have been knocked over by frigging tenders from Australia, I am determined to keep this fit park thing going. Fresh air. Being out of the home office I think will do wonders for my sanity. Who wants to join me?

I am at Sri Hartamas every Monday, Wednesday and Friday working out at the playground. From about 7.30am to 9am. Join me. Email me if you’re keen and I will tell you exactly where.

Check back in 6 months to see if my work life balance plan would have worked itself out by then!
