A Letter from The Heart

This is a long overdue item from my list of a hundred things to do but inspired by Trish and David Adams and their precious daughter, Ashley, who is fighting for her life (please take an hour of your time to get to know Ashley’s story), I decided that it’s now or never.

My Dearest Angel,

I have for you a special story that you must always keep in your heart, up to the day you are 80. When I was only 16 years old, I’d already started dreaming of the day that I was going to have you. I’d chosen your name and I’d pray every now and then to God to please, please, please give me a daughter one day. It wasn’t that I wasn’t interested in having sons but I HAD to have at least one daughter! And I told God, that if he just gave me that wish, I’d never wish again as my life would have been complete. And complete it is the day you came into our lives….

Even when Ultrasounds confirmed that you were a girl, I didn’t get my hopes up fearing the mistakes of medical technology. But the moment the nurse showed you to me, I knew we’d hit home run.

That day that you were born, you obviously were in so much shock and weren’t prepared to leave your comfortable aqua zone (or was it my cushy padding?) that you cried for a whole 24 hours! You were the loudest baby on the whole hospital floor and we could hear your screams from miles away. I remembered thinking, “Please don’t let that be my baby….” when I heard those fiery cries and the rattle of trolley wheels approaching my room but sure enough, it was YOU! You also had SO much hair! You were the hairiest baby in the whole nursery of 30 babies! Imagine our worry when you chose to sleep continuously for the next 24 hours from sheer exhaustion plus you didn’t have a single drop of milk that day. Third day lucky, you gave us your first smile and we quickly noted your dimples (another thing I’d been praying for! amongst a thousand other things).

Memories of you getting your daily UV light that you hated so much that you wiggled your bum-bum in the air, obviously peeved, will always remain in my heart. When we finally brought you home, it turned out that Daddy had forgotten to bring your clothes as he was SO excited when he packed your little pink suitcase. Thankfully, the nurse allowed us to take the ugly blue hospital shirt home. And I must tell you that you had your first modelling stint at the tender age of 5 days old when the nurses selected you to be the model to show all the new moms how to care for their own babies. I was really proud.

That was a whole two years ago. You’ve been the most demanding baby ever since but look at you now!

You’ve always been impatient. You’ve always wanted your own way ALL the time. You’ve always been as stubborn as a dead mule. You’ve always demanded plenty of attention.

So what has changed? You are now 10 kilos heavier and double your original height and your hair has grown, obviously……but you’ve also metamorphosised into the loveliest butterfly.

I love the way when you wake up every morning you lie in bed quietly till you see the first spark of dawn seeping through the windows (or you catch any of us with an open eye, whichever comes first) and bounce up like a lark singing, “Sun’s out! Sun’s out! Wake up, Mummy! Wake up! Sun’s out! Time to play!” Do you know that Daddy and I dread that moment every morning yet we are so thankful that you embrace life with such optimism and excitement, that we literally drag ourselves out of bed, just so…..

I love that you are so, so cheeky and mischievious that you remind me so much of myself. What more, you have the worst of Daddy and me, which makes you even more playful than the two of us put together. Whenever you’ve done something you know you’re not supposed to, your eyes darts towards mine to assess my reaction or to check if I’ve even noticed. And if I haven’t, you tell me. Thank you for your honesty. Thank you for telling me that you had an accident on the floor or you spilled something, or tore something or broke something.

When you are in your playful mood, you’d play tricks on us. Like tell us silly things to make us laugh so that you can laugh in with us. Your laughter is infectious and oh so natural! Your imagination tells us the funniest jokes and your sense of humour (yes, you have one!) is stomach stitch funny. You talk so much, too much sometimes and I wonder where you get that stamina from, for you certainly are far from old to sound like a broken record.

You love singing and dancing and playing, which toddler doesn’t? But you do it with such passion and only if people were to see you in a classroom full of toddlers would they see you shine out. Because you really do shine out with your T personality. What a delightful personality!?! for such a short little thing.

When you are with your Nana, someone who will deliver you the moon, you suddenly sprout black horns. You know your Nana will protect you from anything (bad or good) and you will run to Nana whenever you’re in trouble. You are such a drama queen owing to Eurasian blood probably, that you know how to tell tales and make up stories, yet not fib. You know how to complain and ask for what you want and you even know how to GET what you want although if it is really bad for you, you just won’t get it. Sorry, honey.

I love the way you bring so much happiness into my life so effortlessly, and into everyone elses life. Really. It is hard not to love you. You have so many facial expressions and vocal expressions and even bodilly expressions. Where do you learn them all from?

It is Halloween today and I discovered that you are terrified of skulls. You have never seen a skull to my knowledge yet today, you didn’t like the sight of one and kept saying, “No-no, Mummy…Don’t go there. No-no!” You also get terrified of thunder so we’re working on that fear.

It’s funny how you don’t say No but always No-no. Your favourite question now is “What’s Tessa doing?” or “What’s that?”. You can truly communicate with people, even if your grammar is kooky right now.

Your uncle Ben calls you a cartoon. It is so apt because you really are a cartoon character. You are too funny! Maybe I should start a comic called Tessa, Tubby Tess or Tessa Contessa to rocket my skint status to millionaires.

Whatever the case my dearest little girl….I am so looking forward to the time when you become a teenager. And in the meantime, I am cherishing every moment that I am with you because you are so special. You truly are special. I do not spoil you but I love you with every cell in my large body. And when you laugh, little hearts just burst out of my skin. When you smile, I feel so blessed. When you cry, my heart weighs down. When you scream, my blood starts rippling. And when you do everything else in between, I am just happy. Happy to have this opportunity to be with you. Happy to know you. Happy to guide you. Happy to be there for you.

No words can describe my love for you, my angel, so I won’t even try.

So let’s toast with a Baileys Irish Cream!
